Continual constipation because of neuropathy

Has anyone experience continuous constipation, seemingly/definitely caused by neuropathy? Thank you, Charles

Yes! No one seems to attribute this to my idiopathic peripheral neuropathy, but I certainly do. None of the usual dietary recommendations seem to work, particularly if I travel away from home- which I do regularly. Fibre supplements definitely make matters worse. High fibre fruits and lots of leafy greens seem to help, but I periodically use Prunelax, especially when I travel.
I would love to find an easy palatable solution.

I hear you allwheeldrive. I am unable to eat much fruit because I am diabetic and the high cabs; not to mention the potassium in some fruits.

Yes. I decided several years ago to use any medication or supplement available to deal with this problem. With trial and error, I’ve learned what works, but of course it changes because my neuropathy progresses. My rules: never take a “ wait and see” attitude. If I need laxatives, I take them. I sometimes have diarrhea for hours, as if my digestive system has gone crazy. I will take Imodium. But the best thing I have found is ColonMax, mentioned in this column. It is a supplement and can be found on Amazon. Try one at bedtime and see if it works for you.
I have also been on Motegrity for several years. I am off it now for insurance issues, and find that I don’t need it with the ColonMax.

Do you take magnesium supplements?…..If not, you could try that as it’s good for neuropathy and also can have a laxative effect.

Hi, I think there is a possibility that the constipation is caused by drugs you are taking for neuropathy. I've taken several different drugs to lessen the pain and when I took Lyrica, it constipated me. Hope this helps. Wishing you well.

Thank you julkun. I think that I mentioned that earlier. That and my heart meds contribute to the problem.

I use Miralax daily. Now I have regular BMs.

I tried that and it was diarrhea for a day and constipation again, immediately after the event. I am very happy that it is working for you Sabrina.

I do not take any meds for PN, but I do take a fairly big daily dose of magnesium (doc's suggestion to prevent night cramps- it works!) and I take low dose heart meds and statin for high cholesterol.

I think I have become far too sedentary as my balance deteriorates and of course, this would contribute to my constipation. Time to face my chronic procrastination!!!

Good for you 26sabrina!!! Some people don't like to give in to getting older or changing a routine. If the new normal works for you, then great. Everyone needs to consider doing what works. Wishing you good health in the future to enjoy life at its fullest.
