Compression fractures after 3 yrs on reclast

Posted by sue417 @sue417, 3 days ago

Hi
My first compression fracture was in twenty twenty two. I have been.
On reclast for 3 yrs , Bone density improved in my spine.A lot and my report said Less chance to fracture. Finished radiation in april 2024 for breast cancer. This apr 18th 2 more fractures. I do not understand why. I am so frustrated and confused and angry. Anyone had compression fractures after radiation if you have osteopenia.

Unfortunately it’s pretty common when your on radiation or chemotherapy. Maybe you can try Forteo or Tymlos. Have you been on steroids?

Hi
No I have never had steroids. I wish I'd never had done radiation. It's been a real struggle since. When you have cancer you have to Make decisions. My radiologist told me there was a two percent chance of fracture. I don't.
Know why my endocrinologist would not have done another bone density last year after my radiation. I'm trying to get an appointment with him. My g.p. Had never done a bone density on me.Because I Was not high risk , so they did not find my osteopenia Until I fractured three years ago at 63. I'm very annoyed at the medical system. When you're a female it seems you have to become a physician for yourself also.

I understand your frustration but the radiation for breast cancer was standard treatment to treat any possible cancer cells around your tumor. The last thing you want is it to come back. Cancer is sneaky so good oncologists are aggressive in treatment to save your life. I was told that Tymlos and Prolia were better option to rebuilding bone than bisphosphonates.
Another surprising thing I have learned is antidepressants that are SSRI’s such as Zoloft can definitely increase bone loss too. Don’t know if you’ve taken those or not but I have had several Drs suggest taking them and they have no knowledge of how it affects our bones.
I am sorry for your fractures but they will heal in time and hopefully you can find a different medicine that helps you.
I’m on that path as I write this and just know we survivors have different circumstances that I don’t think wete addressed for the long term of afterwards.
But let’s be thankful there are meds out there to help and the people on this dire are amazing for support when you want or need it.

Hi
Since not being able to take hrt because of my cancer I was having horrible depression and panic attacks. So I now am on zoloft and it's helping immensely. I will have to bring that up to my endocrinologist friday. It took me 4 different medications to get this one.And it works well without side effects. So I am not going off it. As original plan was to keep me on the bis phosphinate for 5 years. So I will find out friday if things are changing. Good luck to you also

I have read several articles that repeat that type of antidepressant has been linked to bone loss and quite severely in some studies. Other antidepressants that aren’t SSRI do not have that effect. I won’t be surprised your Dr will know for mine didn’t and another frustrating medical lack of knowledge.
I mainly mentioned this to you for you had concerns why fractures after treatment. Read up on it and ask. My endocrinologist I saw yesterday was.not knowledgeable about titrating Tymlos but after speaking with her on what I had learned on this site, she was in total agreement.
We have to weigh our options as to what is best in the long run.

Hi
I have not been on zoloft long only 6 weeks and I am at the lowest dose. I don't believe that's why. I believe it's from the radiation treatment to my breast. I have friends who have been on anti depressants for years. They do not have osteoporosis.
They are on alot higher doses than myself. I have been asking my general practitioner for a back xray since last April. He kept saying no. Going forward I will be more assertive. I don't understand their logic.
