My husband was diagnosed in March- the cancer was stage 1, quickly followed by the cirrhosis diagnosis. .has anyone had any experience with treatment for this situation? Thank you in advance.

@baeph, I'm sorry to hear about the additional diagnosis of cirrhosis. Has your husband already had Whipple surgery or is it not possible because of the new diagnosis? What is his treatment plan?
Hello. I had ampullary carcinoma in 2016 and a Whipple procedure was performed. I did not undergo chemotherapy nor radiation as my surgeon and his colleagues consulted and told me that the cancer was not invasive. The cancer had not spread to any of the lymph nodes that were removed and studied.

Our situation was quite different. He had Ampulary cancer, a rare type. Whipple was performed within 2 weeks of surgery and chemo, which was presented as optional, didn’t start until after five months. At that time we knew that we would be dealing with cirrhosis to further complicate the treatment. So far, one round of chemo has been completed with 5 remaining. His second PET scan is mid-October and we will have a better idea of what’s happening.
From my vantage point, Whipple is complicated and requires a long and sometimes complicated recovery. Our surgeon told us that ‘he would be playing golf ina month’ which was totally untrue. I would have much preferred the truth rather than to have to face the disappointment of false optimism.

I have recently been diagnosed with ampullary adenocarcinoma. Had Whipple procedure about 6 weeks ago. It was caught early with negative margins and nodes. Now I’m trying to decide do I have chemo or not? Your situation sounds similar. I wonder how you are doing and what influenced your decision not to have chemo?

And to answer your question-we have been married for 14 years.
Yes, Whipple was done several days after the diagnosis. He just finished round one of chemo. He is very carefully monitored before every treatment.
