Colostomy problem: Rectal discharge 18 months out

Posted by bcstew @bcstew, Sep 29, 2020

My surgery was 18 months ago and I have had no rectal discharge in all that time. Yesterday twice there was a watery discharge.
I am now wearing a pad, Is this a common occurance? Should I see my surgeon?

@mahmudhasan @kenc @marco789 it sounds like you haven't found any solutions for rectal discharge. What helps?

Any ideas to @patriotspride with the burning sensation without discharge?

@rioa21, will be getting a new colostomy. What helpful tips would you offer to help them prepare?

My Mayo provider has prescribed budesonide rectal foam, which seems to help reduce the amount of discharge. I tolerate it very well, however it is not a "magic pill", as I believe that a magic pill doesn't exist. I still have inflammation from this long-term Crohn's flareup, so all that I can do at this point is to mitigate the risk of accidents... which includes being near a bathroom when possible, using the B-sure pads, oral prednisone and foam enemas.

Wish I could provide specific advice, but I have beem dealing with pain, etc since the surgery with very little relief. Suggest making sure the surgeon explains all the ramifications, which may result from the surgery. Also, please find a surgeon that specializes in colorectal surgery.

I checked with my gastroenterologist and they prescribed hydrocortisone 2.5 rectal cream.

That has provided some relief for that issue and seems to also help to discharge any mucosa that builds up due to “ phantom effect” of having that part of my colon detached from the rest that’s now part of the colostomy bag
Process.

After 6 weeks of chemo and radiation I find myself facing a colostomy. The radiation left me with fecal incontinence and the surgeon feels a colostomy will give me a better quality of life. I will also be getting Immunotherapy. Hopefully we can stop this cancer. I have been reading a lot about colostomies, but I know first hand experience will be better. There is so much to know and I’m feeling overwhelmed. Please give me your best tips and advice. Thanks!

I do have a small mass between my bladder and rectum that will need to be surgically removed following chemo treatments that start this week

That may be the source of the pressure as it comes on mainly when I urinate it the colostomy starts to work re it’s normal function

I was seeking any advice re relief from the burning. As mentioned no discharge so any burning remedies appreciated

New colostomy within last month. Experiencing pressure and burning sensation in rectum. No discharge. This is an intermittent pain. Have tried applying heat to relieve, and using bidet to have warmer water

Any similar experiences, and suggestions welcomed.

About to undergo 6 courses of chemo so wanting any advice pre treatment.....

I am having rectal area pain (rectum removed) for several years now. I have not found any solutions eliminating or even reducing the pain. Hope you have better results than I have experienced.

I've had heavy rectal discharge for almost a year since my ileostomy surgery. I have heard that some patients do not experience that but unfortunately I do. But your experience sounds much different than mine. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to go see your provider. In the meantime, I recommend the B-Sure anal leakage pads; though they are expensive, they are very comfortable and absorbent. I hope this helps, or at least puts you somewhat at ease. God Bless!
