Colonoscopy?
My son is scheduled for his first visit at Mayo Rochester July 15, and one of his issues is GI. Does Mayo perform colonoscopies/endoscopies within the initial visit? He has been scheduled for a colonoscopy locally for several weeks. Can’t decide whether we go forward with that locally, a few weeks before our Mayo visit? All we have scheduled so far is a visit with Internal Medicine and Psychiatry (plus bloodwork).

I would think you would not be able to do the colonoscopy at the initial visit- the prep for the colonoscopy may affect the bloodwork and other exams, as well as the procedure would have to be scheduled in advance (once again, that prep).
They have him scheduled for bloodwork on day 1, but yes what you’re saying makes sense. And honestly, helping him with that prep anywhere other than home does not sound enticing!

I would have your son prep and get the colonoscopy locally and send the results to Mayo for your July appointment. Don’t delay looking into this as soon as possible.
Did your son also get an endoscopy? What are his current GI symptoms?
CIGNA has denied his endoscopy twice, even with lab results showing he has iron deficient anemia. I do not understand why they won’t approve it! He has multiple inflammatory markers from a stool test along with the iron deficient anemia. I will most likely self-pay for the endoscopy because the local specialist feels it’s needed. He wants to perform both procedures at the same time.

Did CIGNA give a reason for denial? If not clear on the EOB, call the number on back of insurance card and ask for more clarification. Then ask about appeal process. I have found sometimes it is how order and what you diagnosis is in medical records are. I had thyroid tests denied till had provider change diagnosis code for thyroid disease in my medical records. Did not falsify records. just there are many codes for thyroid disease and we picked one that insurance accepted for blood work.
As far as having the test done locally or waiting for Mayo, I would do locally if approved by insurance and have results sent. As long as they are good quality Mayo should not ask you to repeat. You can always call Mayo and ask to talk to Internal Medicine and ask there opinion.
I once did colon prep in hotel room, but I was not sharing a room. Hope the adjoining room could not hear the toilet flushing all night.
Hope you find your answerers for your son.
The insurance may also have emergency appeal that you must request before the procedure- make sure you exhaust all avenues because they are not in the business of caring for your health, just to make money (bastards).
