Cologuard and Colonoscopy came back positive: Waiting for my plan

Posted by carol32605 @carol32605, Mar 4, 2023

Did a Colorguard test. Came back positive. Had colonoscopy last week. Found flat polyp at base of colon and appendix. Waiting for biopsy. Was scraped according to the doctor. Could not be removed safely. See doctor in 4 weeks.
Looking at what my options could be.
Any ideas from others. Thanks

Hello @carol32605 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am glad that you found this forum.

Here is some information regarding colon polyps from Mayo Clinic's website,

I understand that it is always concerning to have a test and find something that needs to be biopsied. I'm wondering if you had been having any symptoms prior to the positive Cologuard test? How are you feeling since the colonoscopy and biopsy?

Good morning. No symptoms. Full of gas after colonoscopy bit next day felt fine. Has last colonoscopy 5 years ago. Doctor said it was a flat polyp and scraped it.
Waiting for the next step. Just want to be more informed before I see him.
Open to suggestions. Thank you

I can understand that you want to be more informed. Probably the results of the biopsy will help lead the conversation. You mentioned that the doctor said that the flat polyp could not be removed safely. Is that your biggest concern?

If so, I would be inclined to ask who he/she would refer you to in order to have it removed safely. I have had flat lesions (in the upper digestive tract) removed. This, of course, is in a different location from yours, however, I went to a university medical school where there was a doctor who taught the procedure for removing these types of lesions by endoscopy.

Do you have a university medical school nearby?

Thanks for your response. Not familiar with any medical school university.
Thank you for the suggestion though.

Hello @carol32605

I found an article about the removal of flat polyps in the colon. I thought you might find it helpful as you consider your options at your next appointment.

Will you post again with any questions?

Thank you so much. Appreciate it.

Read the article. Gives me some insight of the unknown.
Makes me wonder if a flat polyp near the appendix is not something that most people get.
Or are they difficult to find during a colonoscopy.
Past colonoscopy no polyps but no view of the appendix.

Hi @carol32605

Those are good questions to address with your doctor at your next appointment.

Will you keep in touch and let me know how you're doing?

I am so happy and relieved to tell you that my large anal tumor is gone! I’m feeling a little lighter today! I still have a few issues though. The anal wall is thickened and I will have a PET scan on Monday to take a look. My doctor says it’s probably from the radiation or just inflamed from treatment, so I am not too concerned. I’m glad he’s being very cautious. I still have stomach issues and will see my gastroenterologist on Tuesday. She will schedule my first colonoscopy since treatment. I waited 3 months to get to this day. I was riddled with anxiety. Cancer drains everything out of you, but I made it to the other side, and it’s a great feeling!
