CMF after surgery side effects

Posted by Stacey @stayc329, Jul 6, 2023

I had invasive ductal carcinoma. Had a double mastectomy and 1 lymph node on each side removed which were negative. My onco score came back low and I have a 7% chance of reoccurring. If I do chemo it will lower it to not even 6%. My other option is to do the ovarian suppression but I think based on those side effects I would like to do chemo. Has anyone done the CMF and what were your side effects? Has anyone also chosen to do the chemo like me even though the effectiveness isn’t that great?

My oncotype shows 7% chance of recurrence and that chemo benefits were less than one percent, so I did not do chemo. My score was 21, I am post menopausal.

Are you doing any ovarian suppression such as an AI?

No, I had a hysterectomy in my 40’s.

I had CMF with no side effects. Was never sick and did not lose my hair. I would question why Taxol or something else is not being considered. CMF is one of the oldest treatments and I don’t think it is used a lot anymore. You don’t mention age or size of your tumor.

I am 41 and the tumor is 34mm. They did offer ovarian suppression using Lupron but I considered these side effects (going into menopause and then having possibly not actually gone through menopause by the time I am off the meds to then naturally go through menopause) sounds horrible. I am still trying to make my decision btwn CMF with little effectiveness but will be over in 4 months or do the ovarian suppression with no data on the effectiveness and having not great side effects and also having to do it for 7 years. Any advice or thoughts on this is appreciated.

As I said, I would just question the CMF, if you go the chemo route, because there are newer chemo treatments. You are young, so not sure why you are getting CMF.
