Closest / best hotel for one night stay
We need a one night hotel stay Oct. 1. Looking for your opinions on close, clean, modern hotels “across the street” or connected to Gondo and Clinic building. We have early morning appointment and then not till 1 PM so want to walk back to a room to relax and check out if needed (if hotel will not grant a late check out.) I’ve searched this group and online searches, but would appreciate your personal opinions. Not necessarily looking for the least expensive. Free parking and free breakfast a plus. (Not Kahler properties though). Thank you!

@pe0531 what city?
Oh, good point, sorry! Rochester, MN
All of the Hilton properties downtown are connected to Mayo via the subway and catwalk system. You just follow the signs. For one night I stay at the Hilton Garden Inn.
We have been seeking the best hotel near the Clinic too! Our problem is that none of them are truly accessible even with claims to be so.
Marriot: connected and literally steps away from the Gonda building. Roll in shower creates a wet mess all over the bathroom floor. The safety bar for the toilet is BEHIND the toilet tank!! The lighting is super dim with LED bulbs throughout the room. The door to the room will not stay open long enough to drive a power chair in or out, so a helper is needed. Parking is an extra $22 on top of the $200 plus room rate, taxes, city cost.
The Brentwood; offers nice suites. However, the mattresses are old and soft, so we literally roll to the outside of the bed! Some rooms have been updated but the mattresses are still horrible! Parking is available and included. Hotel is connected via the tunnel. Breakfast is included. Accessible is subjective. Tubs do have hand held shower device available upon request. Toilets are not high rise and there are no toilet lids. One can request a plastic riser to set on the toilet. The doors do not stay open to get a wheelchair through. Any people park mobility devices in the hallway.
The Hilton: it is located three blocks away, on the east side of Broadway.Parking, valet, costs an extra $20 per day. We did learn later that a ramp on the south side of the building. It is beautiful and well maintained. Vouchers can be included, for an extra cost (!!) for breakfast. We slept late but our voucher was honored for lunch - best Monte Cristo sandwich ever!!
The hotel IS connected via the skyway and tunnel system, but we have not figured that out yet since we stayed during a nice Summer week and we enjoyed the walk.
Hyatt: the hotel faces Civic Parkway and is just a couple of blocks north of Methodist Hospital. There is a parking ramp that, I believe, is included in the price of the room. It is impossible to enter the hotel from the ramp without help since the doors are not accessible. The sidewalk in the front has a scary, unmarked drop-off that is not wheelchair friendly. The railroad track just behind the hotel have gravel and some tar that are supposed to make the tracks level and accessible, but it is a big fail. There is a shuttle to the Clinic every few minutes. The room that we had was supposed to be accessible but it did not have those features. We were told later that a shower chair and a high plastic loose toilet riser could be requested. We asked for an accessible room but upon arrival, we were told that our room was accessible. I did talk to another guest who said that her room WAS accessible, so maybe the manager on duty was just clueless, but we will definitely NOT stay there again.
I think that hotel inspectors and managers need to sit in wheelchairs or power chairs to check these accessible claims out. Step into my shoes and learn that accessibility is not a joke. It is so important for safety concerns and hotels, ESPECIALLY NEXT TO MAYO CLINIC need to accommodate guests with safety features!
Thank you so much for your comprehensive reply. We do not have the challenges you do (yet) in needing an accessible room but the information you provided is very helpful. It is more surprising than one would think to find a property that checks all the boxes: connected via walkway or subway, adequate free parking, breakfast included, etc. without having to determine accessible features as well.
Unfortunately Free Parking downtown Rochester is not usually available. The hotels further out have that. Parking option would be airport parking and take the shuttle or with some hotels and the status clubs such as Hilton Diamond or Marriott Rewards then parking is gratis.
Most hotels in Rochester are very accommodating and can offer up suggestions for alternatives. For special needs, calling ahead can solve a lot of mystery.
We have the same schedule next week two tests 7:30 am in the morning then consult 1:45. We stay at the Staybridge suites and walk. Not something everyone will want to do but it’s so easy to get in and out just a little walking .
Thanks for your reply. We are able to walk. Approximately how many blocks or how long did it take you to walk from Staybridge?
It’s about 10-15 minutes. @ 7 blocks. There’s also a shuttle but it stops a few places. It’s the Staybridge across from St Mary’s hospital on 11th.
@pe0531, The about information for Staybridge Suites says it's about a 3 minute walk but I know it would take longer than that for me. I haven't stayed there but have read others say it's a good place to stay. I think it would take me at least 5 minutes of hoofing it if I was trying to hurry but I'm an old guy that has trouble walking. Can't count the blocks because some of them are longer than normal but guessing it's about an 8 block walk. Attached a map that might help.
