Problem with Chronic constipation

Posted by bb03 @bb03, Feb 1, 2021

I have a history of hypothyroidism, severe endometriosis/treatment was a hysterectomy 17 years ago.I also have a hx of IBS. My thyroid hormone levels are stable. I eat like a rabbit(I poop like one too, LOL!!!!!!). I eat a large amount of fiber and drink almost every hour(nonalcholic).ONly prescription drugs I take are armour thyroid and my estrogen/prosterone troche. I make a coconut bread and I add psyllium husks, flax seed and chia seed to it. I eat it practically every am. I also eat a spinach salad for lunch daily with nuts and yogurt and eat a lean meat and veggie and more coconut bread at night. I do one cheat meal with a cheat dessert once per week. I am relatively active for my age of 60. I've been to a gastroenterologist and we have tried Linzess which didn't help at all. I take miralax, and a Super Cleanse tab one per day which has herbs to soften the stool and to stimulate the bowel and It barely works. I am at a loss. I have not tried Montegrity yet. I don't know if it will be helpful and the side effects scare me. I had a CT of my abdomen and it was ok, no obstructions. The gastroenterologist that I go to practically accused me of abusing laxatives. I would be impacted if I didnt use the miralax and the Super Cleanse. Diet/water and activity do not help. I had diarrhea from my late teens to the age of 36 when my intestines out of the blue just shut down completely. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I was put on Synthroid but the constipation didn't go away. So if there is any gastroenterologist out there that can help me, please let me know.I feel defeated and worry about my health.

I have chronic constipation which has increased. I have had two tests: Defography and Manometry and a diagnosis of pelvic floor dysfunction with a rectocele. The rectocele is a pouch and holds stool.
I have gone throug every OTC constipation med which worked for a brief time. Last prescription med which worked in the beginning and now hit and miss is Linzess. I am very concerned. My Dr. told me I will have to take a med to be able to go. I had a SITZ marker test which also showed slow transit. I am in contact with a gastroenterologist.

I began constipation as a child.

I hear you and understand what you are going through. I am using every laxative known to man and still do not have normal bowel movements. I feel for everyone who has CC. It changes your life.

I take the 3 OptiMag and 1 K2+ Potassium at bedtime with water + lots of water during the day. I don't take too much Calcium especially before bed because it can constipate. During the night 1 Optimag and 1 K2+ Potassium. First thing in the morning put water on to make I quart of hot water + eat half of the refrigerated overnight mix of scant T of chia and T of flax seeds ground in a coffee grinder. I prep the next days mix using organic prune juice stirred into the ground seeds to make a sloppy mixture. It gels up. Each morning before breakfast along with the prune juice mix I eat one or a combo of the following: cooked cold squash, pumpkin or sweet potatoes; T of tahini; 1/2 cut rhubarb cooked, fresh plums or 6 dried prunes. If I am stressed, worried it won't work for the rest of my life, etc I drink 1 -2 fairly strong coffee. I don't like coffee so most the time I can do without. I resort to smooth move that evening if I wasn't regular. After I knew last Dec. I had a redundant colon, got ideas from my Naturopath, and on line + it's physical it took me trial and error for about 4 months but now I can pretty much count on being regular with my "formula." Avoid sugar, too much starch, eat organic, drink lots of water and avoid processed food. If we grave something often that is something that does our health no good. Thing is I also use a stool to put my feet up on for better posture. When I breath in I fill with air and then gently feel the bowel release if all is good. I started the first month on various laxatives and they just weren't worth the inconsistency and how they effected me. Does that help Ann? Let me know if you get a chance. Trial and error but it is exciting when it starts to really work, what a relief. Take notes each day, time, what you're testing, etc @farmersmith

Good luck, @isadora2021 Hope some of these ideas help. It has been so nice to have basic although not perfect regularity again. Keeping notes, being honest about healthy food intake, working on relaxing so our brains don't go against us and checking out what the processes were helped me. It isn't overnight but great to be regular again. It is a more ample regularity which makes sense. I did add T ground sesame seeds soaked .

Helpful research of biological processes that take place in our gut:
- Migrating Motor complex which is the electroactivity in the GI tract during meals and fasting
- Osmotic gradient. If too much water is pulled into the colon, diarrhea results. If not enough water is pulled into the colon constipation results. Balance of minerals is important. Magnesium, potassium and sodium brings water into the colon. I have found balancing these help prevent constipated. I have to watch my calcium intake because it tends to encourage constipation. Calcium carbonate seems to be the most constipating. I depend on blood work from time to time to make sure my minerals are balanced.
Good luck, @farmersmith

Hi jp9,

I have what you have.

When my rectocele pouch is full, I discovered that sitting on a hard chair, crossing my right leg high over my left, and then leaning on my left butt cheek collapses the pouch and I can poop out the stool in the bathroom after just sitting in this position for a matter of minutes. It has been working every time. I love this fix.

For the CIC, I eat really well (very few commercially processed foods), don't overdo it on fiber (as I have IBS-C and I also believe you don't want to overload a sluggish piping system), have slippery elm (inner bark only) "tea" in the am and take a magnesium supplement (Hilma gentle bowel support) at bedtime.

What really helps me poop when my rectocele is not acting up is one golden kiwi a night. I kid you not. For me, it is a game changer. It acts as a stimulant.

A regular green kiwi works, but not as well. There is a study on it (include NIH in your search terms) and my pelvic floor MD has mentioned it. Now I notice it mentioned in the literature from time to time.

I have been dealing with chronic constipation since childhood- unfortunately, for me it never was resolved with fiber supplements or meds. My symptoms are similar to yours- to the point where I stopped going out to dine with groups of friends because I would have to leave the table due to the amount of gas. I was even in the drug trial for Linzess, which worked while taking but didn’t have any lasting effects when you stopped. My go to solution is Australian black licorice- works within a day to relieve the constipation- but again, only a temporary fix. I have done the whole route with gastrointestinal doctor and they just want to give meds- so I prefer the licorice to that. Best of luck, hope your issue resolves.

Australian black licorice, like the candy?? Or is this an herb? Sounds very interesting as I struggle with the same thing as everyone else in this group. I have tried all of the over-the-counter products and they are all just a temporary fix. When I’m at my wits end, I finally take a laxative or a combination of a stool softener and Metamucil. I’ll spend one day in misery, one day feeling OK and then right back to where I was. I’m interested in the licorice idea.

I don't know what's going on with my digestion ,I have been chronically constipated since December so it's been 4 months. I am always gassy and the smell has been very foul so I've been scared and embarrassed to be around people lately because of how bad it smells, when I've tried to poop only gas comes out most of the time, sometimes my stomach feels stiff and I start to feel lethargic. And I've tried almost everything digestive drinks like meta Mucil, eating more fiber i live an active lifestyle and I drink plenty of fluids and water. I recently had an appointment with my pediatrician about this she made me do colon cleansing for a day . And take Miralax for a minimum of 3 weeks. My stools were watery during the cleansing but after a couple days it feels like my stool is going back to being hard and stubborn. I still don't poop completely sometimes and I'm still gassy but it's not smelly like it was before. She said I can stop taking Miralax when i feel like my stools are going back to normal after a few days or weeks and it's been a week or two and a few days. I know I still need to wait one more week but my follow-up appointment is next Wednesday. The Miralax seems like a temporary fix, I feel like it'' never go away the worst part is I cant figure out what the cause is. I don't think it's IBS because I heard IBS involves bloody stools and stomach cramps I don't have bloody stools and I don't think I get stomach cramps . It just feels like have some other serious digestive problem or something I don't really know. I don't want to be constipated for the rest of my life I feel miserable, my pediatrician said if the Miralax doesn't work as intended I may have to see a gastroenterologists.Has anyone or is anyone dealing with chronic constipation ?,does it or did it ever go away ? and has anyone been experiencing the same symptoms as me ?.Do you have any recommendations on how they treat their constipation ?

I've tried all the scripts-useless for me. Prunes by the pound, kiwis too, but fear their seeds will add to the chances of diverticulitis and small bowel partial obstructions. Been fighting it for 17 years, and it is at its worst now. I eat little solid foods and drink lots and lots and I have a meal replacement shake that my daughter did all the research and now she sells it. So at least I get some nutrition in. I use miralax 3 capfuls 1-2x a day and have found that Metamucil gummies help me better than the powder. I use 3-5. My big hope is that my Hyperparathyroidism and elevated calcium levels are definitely a huge factor. I am having the surgery to remove 3 1/2 of the 4 glands. This probably has been at least part of the problem for 8 years. But my doctors really didn't follow through with my levels. Once I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2008, they were arrogant enough to not keep me being tested for PTH, calcium and vitamin D. My smooth muscles, needed for a good poop, have severely limited, since elevated calcium reduces smooth muscle receptors. I have to keep my body in super loose to diarrhea, so the poop explodes out, cuz my muscles don't push anymore.

For the past year or so my rib cage area is like really painful the other day I had a small backache that radiated around to the front and I went to ER and they discovered which I have had problems before that I had backed up constipation so I have been taking MiraLAX Fiber supplement magnesium citrate stool softener, and I still have not evacuated like I should have a gastrologist a new one in a month. I hope I don’t explode before the month is over. Any suggestions out there?

I order from discount meds direct-comes from Canada or New Zealand. You need to have doctor fax prescription to fax-1-800-815-0062. Phone -(941) 421-7155. It helps with my Gastroparesis and constipation. Cathy

I was very constipated during oral chemo, so I was given a prescription for lactolose. I took it along with Senna-s for stool softener. Only once did I resort to magnesium citrate and it caused explosive diarrhea, but it certainly cleaned out my colon.

Sounds silly I know, but my doctor put me on Milk of Magnesia with warm water and that night I exploded... cleans you out at least.
Now, I take dried prunes and dried fruit before bed with a glass of water and it seems to work ok in the morning. No fun I know... good luck
