Changing Mayo Hospitals from Minneapolis to Phoenix?

Posted by dandl48 Dave @dandl48, May 15, 2019

Currently I am a very happy patient @ the Rochester campus's Gastroenterology Department. Due to a recent move switching to the much closer Phoenix campus would save me a lot of money and since we are on a fixed income (Retired) saving money is important to us.

My questions are as follows:
1) Do Campus's make these type referrals?
2) In Rochester, my Medicare and BCBS covers 99% of all the bills. Since starting with Mayo in 2015, my out of pocket hospital bills that I was libel for was $8.00. I have been told that Phoenix doesn't accept Medicare patients, is this correct?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Hello Dave, @dandl48

You are asking some good questions. I do encourage you to call the Phoneix campus and inquire about billing for Medicare at their facility. I have heard from others who have gone to the Phoenix campus that Medicare was not accepted, but I think that if you are resident of Arizona, it might be covered, but you need to call to be sure. Will you be living in Arizona or in a nearby state?

Here is the number for the Phoenix campus, call and ask about billing Medicare, Telephone requests, Mayo Clinic in Arizona, 480-301-8484.

I hope that your move goes well. I'm sure you will enjoy the sun!

Hey Dave, you’re correct in that the Phoenix and Scottsdale campuses do not accept Medicare PRIMARY, but they’ll bill Medicare if its SECONDARY.

If it’s a cancer diagnosis then the Phoenix Campus has a Foundation that to my knowledge will treat you and/or make recommendations for other doctors in your Medicare Plan after the Mayo has made a diagnosis. They also do this for the non-insured but I think in that case they’ll pay 100%.

It’d be best if you check with The Mayo Clinic Phoenix to confirm my statements. Please don’t just take my word for it!!!

@hopeful33250 Thanks Teresa; not a resident of AZ, but live on the Calif/OR border and visit So Cal 3-4 times a year.

@laylabug I find it very weird that Rochester accepts Medicare but AZ doesn't. Guess I'll have to continue to fly to Rochester vs a 4 hr drive to AZ from our kids house in So Cal when we are visiting them.

@colleenyoung Thanks for the links! Need to talk with my Rochester MD, to see if he would recommend changing and if AZ even offers the area of specialization needed.
