Changing bowel habits need advice

Posted by eaglesdv @eaglesdv, 3 days ago

I need advice,
For a month, I've been severely constipated for a week at a time. With abdominal pain, flank pain and cramping my appetite has decreased. Today I had a BM that was floating, pale and twisted into a ball. I'm waiting to get into a GI. Any advice?

Have you tried eating more fiber? I eat plain Raisin Bran everyday now and have mirakax twice a day when needed. I also eat more fruit. Less breads. Have you gone to pcp for bloodwork for the pale colored poop? Just to get things started and ruled out.

Try 2 slices of Ezekiel bread toasted with avocado daily. I do this and am regular and never constipated. The Ezekiel bread is great as it does not have flour and is made from sprouted grains which have some great enzymes for gut health in addition to the fiber. The best place to buy it is Trader Joes.

@eaglesdv Welcome to Mayo CLinic Connect. I have always heard if there is a change in bowel habits that last like yours have, you should see a doctor.

We are not medical professionals here, and cannot/should not be offering medical advice. We can share our experiences, share what has worked for us. That is all.

In my experience, my body will swing from constipation to diarrhea to something in between, basically due to diet and medications. For me, a couple cups of coffee can keep me regular. But that said, unusual colors of our stool can signify a problem. When my husband's gall bladder was acting up, his stool was pale and grayish. That was an indication to him that things were not right.

Have you checked with your primary care doctor, yet?
