cervical Spinal stenosis, is it safe to use a riding mower?
I’ve recently been diagnosed with CSS. I have a summer job mowing lawns. It’s about 3-6 hours a day. Should I keep this job or look for something else? I’ve been stretching daily after work which helps. Any help would be appreciated. Fyi, I’m in PT so I’m going to ask them as well.

Is it causing symptoms?
I have cervical stenosis and going over bumps or even pushing a shopping cart on pavement can give me symptoms.
Are the lawns bumpy?
thanks for replying! some areas are bumpy, some are not so much. i’ve been doing 30 hrs over 3 1/2 days which i think was pushing it. i’m going to ask if 3-4 hrs over 5 days is ok and eliminate the bumpy areas. i’m new to the symptoms thing. i’m not experiencing the symptoms i had when i was first diagnosed, but i am somewhat sore after work.
@vinnyv - Welcome to Mayo Connect!
I've had CSS and related spinal problems leading to a 4-level ACDF a little over a year ago. I haven't mowed grass in years but don't recall any cervical symptoms associated with that effort.
I'd suggest you seek a medical opinion before making a final decision on your mowing work. No two people's spinal issues are alike so answers to your basic question - may not be the most useful for you. Your PT person may have an opinion - but a medical professional (I like a physiatrist) opinion is best.
thanks for the info and suggestion!
