Catheter removal

Posted by johndavis60 @johndavis60, 2 days ago

Hi All, I had prostatectomy on May 22, and they are removing my catheter on May 28. I don’t love the catheter but I am concerned that this is not enough time. What do you think?

I've always read that it's 2 weeks, to give it time to heal.
That's what I had.

I had it for two weeks, but I’ve been told 10 days has been common recently. Why are they in such a hurry?

I’m not sure. It was originally to be taken out June 5, but they moved it up a week. I sent a message to my doctors and awaiting a response. My drain incision continues to leak also, but seems to be getting better.
Thanks!!

My catheter was removed at 1 week at Mayo Phoenix last year. That's what they had said prior to surgery and that's what was actually done after surgery. I didn't have any other drain. Also, the surgery had no complications nor problems during the week of the catheter, so that probably contributed to the 1 week duration. Best wishes.

Seems a little rushed - your urethra was sliced in half just one week ago.

Exactly. Maybe they will just test it out and if I need more time, they will put it back in? I have no idea.

I just heard from my surgeon and from my urologist. They both told me that the catheter will be ready to come out on the 28th and to not reschedule my appointment. They believe they have a good connection and the stitches will last several months for support.

Well... they studied this stuff for years & we didn't. We'll go with their advice. Lucky you.

Well OK then…that’s all you can do I guess.

Still very nervous about it. What if they are wrong?
