Can LPR lead to cancer?
I was diagnosed with LPR during the summer while being scanned and tested for possible lymphoma. I had a lesion in my throat and swollen lymph nodes in June which flattened out in about 6 weeks before they surgically biopsied them. But the growth or sac in my throat remained. I'm still clearing my throat and the urge to cough up the mucus is still strong. The latest MRI said the growth has not increased in size so they will follow up with another MRI in 5 months. ENT put me on 2 doses of Omeprazole/day, referred me to alkaline diet and I started vocal cord and voice therapy for throat healing. I have been told by Drs that lack of treatment can possibly lead to larynx, throat, esophageal cancers which I worry about because I don't feel like the treatment is really treating the problem and I'd like to use an alternative to the ppi and also take the proper pre/probiotic for the strains that are appropriate. Also I am taking Monjauro for diabetes and weight loss and the diets seem to be opposite and the side effects of the gpl1 can get confused with the gastro stuff. Sorry for the long explanation but has anyone experienced cancer with this as a cause or had negative complications while taking a gpl-1 medication. Thanks. No one u know has even heard of lpr or silent reflux!!

Hello @mfio and welcome to Mayo Connect. I see that you would like to connect with others to discuss this new diagnosis. Here is a link to posts on Connect where members are talking about LPR. I would encourage you to read these posts and ask questions of the members who have posted.

Since you are concerned about the suggested treatment, have you considered getting a second opinion? Perhaps a consultation with an expert in the field will put your mind at ease. I would recommend that your second opinion be at a multi-disciplinary health care institution, such as a university medical center or a medical center, such as Mayo Clinic (here is a link to appointment information for Mayo Clinic, http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63.)
Please continue to post with your questions and concerns, and be sure to read the posts in the link above from others who are also dealing with LPR.
Many people in this group have experience with LPR. Listen to your doctor, that it can cause cancer, so I suggest you use the omeprazole until you have healing. When the need to clear your throat etc gets better you can see if you can take it once instead of twice a day, and/or lower the dosage (40 to 20 mg), and slowly wean it down and replace with an H2 blocker (famotidine).
