Can I get a 2nd opinion on a meningioma

Posted by eshelman1977 @eshelman1977, Mar 4 2:17pm

A mass was found in my brain after accidentally falling with a ct scan 1 week later an mri confirmed it. Yesterday the neurosurgeon office said they wouldn't touch it and don't feel my headaches and sight issues are coming from that. It lies between my left Occipital Lobe amd Ceribal. I high risk cancer and benign tumors have turned cancerous in my mother killing her at age 50, also grandmother died of cancer at age 50. Already had hysterectomy due to fear of cancer and my thyroid has several they are already watching. We were told cant guarantee it won't but also that they didn't want to remove it just watch it but we are not ok with watching it and it becoming to late to take care of. Would rather have it removed now while still manageable.

@eshelman1977, welcome to Connect. I don’t blame you for wanting a 2nd opinion. I would opt for that too, for peace of mind if for nothing else.
Considering your past history it would be reassuring to hear from another reputable medical source that it’s ok to leave well enough alone.

Here is a link to Mayo Clinic where you can initiate the request for an appointment. http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
Open that page and there will be prompts for starting the process. You’ll be able to opt for which campus is more convenient for you. There are Mayo Clinic’s in Rochester, MN Jacksonville, FL Phoenix, AZ

If Mayo isn’t an option for you, do you live near a larger teaching hospital or university hosptial?

how big is it? they usually wait until it's 4 cm or larger, unless it's causing problems. I had a baseball size 6+ cm removed last summer. It turned out to be grade 3 malignant, but that is very rare. 1-3% of meningiomas. Only 300 a year are diagnosed in the US. Now I'm having trouble finding any information about it because they are so rare

I definitely would get a second opinion and as soon as possible. There are several large University hospitals that you can do a self referral. I wish we had the computer system we have not 30 years ago. I had a ping-pong size tumor in 1989- I was 39- and the only thing the Neurosurgeon could tell me was that it was benign. He was fascinated with it and was unwilling to send me to a higher level of care. As a result I feel that he was not professionally/experienced enough to take on the challenge! As a result I ended up basically losing my right eye and nerve function of # 3,5,7. My right eye-lid could not go up, the eye was frozen in place and the right hemisphere of my face and skull remain numb. The tumor was a rare tumor - chondroid chordoma - I finally wrote him a letter last year declaring his professional deficit by not recognizing that I should have been sent to a higher level of care. To this day I remain resentful of my altered appearance and the comments, stares, etc. Sorry, a little venting! The point is go some Where that has a large N euro-Surgery department and a large team of experienced physicians.
