Can cancer cause weight gain pre-treatment?
Hello all! I recently found a small mass near my belly button (just down and to the right of it) and I have an ultrasound for it soon. I’ve always heard though that if a person gets cancer, they lose weight. I on the other hand, started off very small and have put on over twenty pounds within two months with no significant lifestyle changes. Could this be connected to the mass at all? We don’t know if it’s malignant yet, it might just be scar tissue or something, but I was just curious.

It’s hard to say because I believe it might have to do with where or what type of cancer it is, in your case it’s not been diagnosed yet. I think weight loss is more common than weight gain but perhaps it’s something else and not cancer, I understand that you’re nervous and that’s understandable but just be confident that you’re getting it checked out so for now just wait and see, best wishes.
Hello @littlez I would try and wait to see what they find out about this small mass. It may be scar tissue of something else but equally benign.
That is not to say I wouldn’t be talking to my doctor about rapid weight gain, especially if your lifestyle has not changed. This could be completely unrelated to the mass and I wouldn’t still want it investigated.
Have you had any lifestyle, dietary or hr oral changes that would explain rapid weight gain?
@auntieoakley no I haven’t had any changes at all that could explain the weight gain. I’m definitely hoping that the mass is benign, I was just wondering if it was possible to be related.
Unlike in my badly botched post above lol. I would definitely want that investigated.
Do you have an appointment yet to have that mass checked out?
@littlez Yes my appendix cancer caused me to put on weight and bloat. I look at photographs of when I was slim and normal in 2018 and compare them to the gradual blow up to diagnosis in 2021. In retrospect for me and my particular cancer it was an obvious side effect I missed. Like my deep fatigue. I thought it was all down to perimenopause.
I hope yours is just a benign cyst and I’m glad you’re getting it checked early.
