Burning Throat and Burping and Gas after Eating
I am suffering with Burning Throat and Burping and Gas after eating and drinking.
I had an Upper Endoscopy a few months ago and all looked fine and they are assuming that I have GERD. How can I be sure of that?
I have been off of Prilosec for about a week (I was on it about 6 weeks and tapered off of it using it every other day) I am taking Pepsid at night. I feel like the Burning Throat has gotten worse since I tapered off of Prilosec but don't want to stay on it because of risk of side effects (particularly osteoporosis and vitamin depletion). I have been taking Reflux Gourmet and also Gaviscon sometimes.
I wonder if the increased burning throat is from rebound from getting off of Prilosec?
Will Pepsid have the same reaction if I get off of that?
Does Pepsid have side effects too?
Any other ideas of anything it could be besides GERD?
I have been chewing gum which I am not sure if it helps or ends up making me more gassy.
I am wondering if it could be some sort of infection instead?
I am at a lower weight than I'm usually at but can't seem to gain the weight back.
Thanks so much!

Welcome @hap8
I was diagnosed w GERD over 20 y's ago. I was on protinix 40mg 20y's also. I stopped all antacids. Yes, parched, burnt throat, gas lasted near a month. Today w diet commitment to dietary changes, I've a renewed hope.
Gum & nail biting & alcohol & cigarettes besides what we cannot eat. I've fixed my own food cupboard for my go to. W/o having to bypass the things to me which were so appealing. If something you eat makes ya miserable, I'm sure our bodies are saying Woe Do Not Enter. Best to you
This will sound insane but I was diagnosed with GERD as well and they said PepsidAC twice a day for 2 weeks and after 4 or 5 days I was having issues with depression. Those OTC PPI's have weird side affects. A few weeks later I was diagnosed with Alpha Gal allergy and subsequently quit eating mammalian meat. And this is where it gets even stranger, for some reason I picked up a bag of after dinner mints the sugary kind. And they seem to help my GERD! and without the meat, day by day my GERD symptoms like 90% resolved. And also for some reason my belly fat is completely gone and I've lost 9 pounds is 12 weeks 🙂 I know that sounds spectacularly odd but it did happen! Now I'm addicted to mints 🙂 LOL lots of things worse than that! I am planning on having blood work done next month to make sure the weight loss is not attributed to something else really bad ):
I would recogmmend that any one with problems with gas get a good, well reserched probiotic and take it religiously. Swanson Foods sell some good ones. Gas producers (and there are many of them) have no place in a healthy biome. Just my experience of a lifetime with bowel disease and now medication and symptom free. (And have the "Normal" colonoscopies to go with it.)
Was the scope by a GI doctor, or an ENT? The GI doctor scope doesn't look at the throat, just the esophagus. You may have laryngopharyngeal reflux, also known as silent reflux. If that is the case, diet and lifestyle changes can help. Dr. Jamie Koufman has a lot of free info online on the condition. Dr. Jonathan Aviv is another source of info, and there is a FB group devoted to generating recipes based on his version of the low acid, whole food diet. I was never diagnosed with LRP but if I follow the diet my throat feels better and the gas subsides. Doesn't hurt to try the diet changes while continuing your search for answers to see if it helps. I wish you well.
Thx so much for your message. I would love to take a probiotic. I do eat yogurt quite a bit but I am soooo overwhelmed by all of the different probiotic options. Someone once said Align? Any other specific ones to recommend? Thank you!
Thank you so much for your message. For this—would I see a gastroenterologist or more of a throat doctor? I have been trying to avoid acidic foods (it’s hard for me not having coffee and a little wine sometime but I have been trying!).
Frankly, the ones you buy in the store often have very few species in them. The advice I found (from a doctor) when I did my search was to get as many different species as you could and not worry about the colony forming units. That is how I ended up at Swanson Foods (online) to see what they had. The best at that time was Epic Pro with 25 species. A friend (also a MD) sent the individual research on the bugs and they all had good things to say about them. Fast foreward several years and Swansons' has a new one which I know nothing about so I stick with Epic Pro. Bare in mind- we are all snow flakes and the biome is one place we really differ. No two alike. Start slow and let your body judge.
You see an Ear Nose Throat doctor to scope thru your nose and down your throat. It's a very thin instrument, no sedation. Dr. Jamie Koufman, an ENT, has a lot of free information on her web site about silent reflux and treatments. Treating the condition via diet can be challenging depending on your likes. There are non acidic versions of coffee, according to my friend who has found some. There is a FB page that has a ton of recipes and advice on what to eat and drink based on what another ENT, Dr. Jonathan Aviv, has said. Acidwatcher Diet Warriors Support Group. If you can do the low acid, whole food diet for 30 days without cheating you may be more motivated to keep going because you will start to feel better.
