To complicate opinion, I have been diagnosed with cancer but don't know all of details. The extreme exterior of left leg has been hurting for a week. Walking more than a few steps is very painful. There is an exaggerated bulge at hip and the muscle his swollen to the knee. Is this a complication of cancer or infection. I'm a 71 year old male

I would think this is an infection with the swelling. Does it feel warm/hot to the touch and is it tender to the touch? Are you running a temperature? All indicative of infection. Hip bulge swelling to the knee needs to be looked at ASAP

@amdabrock1 @msh466 is right - what you are describing sounds like it is an infection or possible implant failure. It should be checked out very soon. Be sure to go somewhere that is able to do an x-ray.

If you cannot get in somewhere right off, I would suggest urgent care to at the least, have some blood work done…have them check for Cobalt / chromium levels as well! Perhaps they would also check for a staph infection?
Regardless, be a strong advocate for yourself, be heard! My wife went almost two years in constant pain only to find these levels were toxic along with staph infection.

I can guess that you are having problems with the hip hardware. And need CT imaging. Don't wait to see your physician. Where is the cancer.

I would go to the emergency room. It sounds painful and if it is an infection, you need it treated as soon as possible. They can do X-ray, ct scan and mri to look at your bone and soft tissues plus do bloodwork to check for infection. If an infection, they may need to give you antibiotics. Don’t suffer in silence or delay treatment.

It could also be a circulation or blood clot issue so you want to get that checked asap.
