Boniva

May I hear positive and negative experiences from taking monthly Boniva?
I have taken about 6 doses. I think my gums may be bleeding more often when flossing. I read horror stories about jaw issues. Also, I'm confused as to what it is supposed to do.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Osteoporosis & Bone Health Support Group.

It is classed as a bisphosphonate. They slow bone loss. You can look it up on Google. There is another type of osteoporosis medication that builds bone like tymlos, forteo and Evenity.
Read everything you can here and other so that you can work with your doctor to choose which treatment works best for you.

About 15 years ago, my GP gave me a free sample of once-per-month Boniva pill. That night, I had a high fever, joint pain all over my body but especially in my sternum, and was barely able to move the next day. Also, the middle joint of one of my fingers fused overnight. The GP dismissed all this as "flu symptoms," but I found an online site with many women complaining about similar side effects. As a pianist who relies on healthy fingers, this scared me off osteoporosis drugs ever since. (Joint fusion is irreversible.).

My osteoporosis is far worse now, so I'm belatedly shopping around for medication with the least side effects. My doctor prescribed Tymlos, but that didn't work out due to shipment issues (it was sent from AZ to CA in an unrefrigerated truck). Another poster recommended Forteo, so I will look into that.
