bone pain with fosomax

Endocrinologist put me on fosamax in May; by August was having some bone pain (feet mainly; hard to walk). Said he did not hear of that side effect and to take a 2-3 week break from the drug, during which I had no pain at all. Started up again and by week 2 pain in feet and ankles back. Anyone experience this?

Joint pain is common with Fosamax and our feet have so many little joints.
Some think that the joint pain is an indication of an osteoporosis medication being effective. I suspect that it is inflammation of the joint which can only cause damage. My uneducated guess is that Fosamax isn't the medication for you. You might ask your physician to write for a similar bisphosphonate--ibandronate or risidronate. You could ask to try the injectibles.

Thank you...I was surprised that the doc said he hadn't heard of pain (perhaps I am his only patient on fosamax that has experienced it); and it is on the list of side effects! Will have a conversation about other meds. Would love to avoid the injectables as some of them I have been told you never get off of.

@jozer
the prevailing thought from the osteoporosis specialists is that osteoporosis is a condition that requires ongoing treatment. Most of the bone gain is lost after you quit taking the medication. The great exception is Prolia where you not only lose the entire gain but more. If it isn't followed by another drug, a patient would be better off never having taken it. Your doctor warns you wisely about Prolia.
The bisphosphonates like alendronate (Fosamax), risidronate or ibandronate clad your bones for years and so have longer term fracture prevention after cessation. But they build a weaker bone.
Forteo and Tymlos build the best bone. Both prevail over a year after use and they never make you worse off than before use. Still, they have to be followed by a relay medication.
Reclast is a yearly injection, but because of your reaction to Fosamax you'd want to be cautious with taking a similar drug that could cause foot pain for a year or more.
Everything depends upon your bone scores.
None of us like the committment to a life time of osteoporosis pharmaceuticals, we're all afraid of fracture. And when you think of it the committment is similar to eating or brushing your teeth or exercising, except for the possibility of side effects.

Thanks for the info; you really don't get too much time at the doc's office for questions and a lot of questions come up after your appointment! Been doing a lot of "research" (internet) and my biggest concern is that a once a year injection may come with side effects that you can't do anything about; at least on fosamax you just stop taking it. I would rather not have the treatment be worse than the disease (which is silent for me; very shocked when my dexa scores came back); but I don't want to crumble shoveling snow this winter either! I am going to set up an appointment with my endocrinologist for a discussion about side effects and all options out there.

I sure had bone pain with Prolia, FYI if you’re thinking to switch

@jozer, for the very reasons you expressed, you might ask about Forteo or Tymlos. They build the best bone the fastest. And, if you have a negative reaction, these medications leave the body quickly-- within 24 hours. So you aren't trapped for year or six months.
Osteoporosis is silent until it starts screaming. The fractures are so painful that many tolerate side effects to make certain that there are no more fractures.
Hey, if you are going to be shoveling snow

I took a weekly Fossomax pill for 9 weeks before my bone pain became too severe to ignore. it's been 2 weeks since the last pill and I am unable to put weight on my right leg. Severe pain starts in my right hip and includes my right groin area, uooer right thigh and my right knee is some what swollen and feels like I fell on it (hard). Dr. stopped the Fossomax 2 weeks ago. Yesterday I had xrays which show no fractures. I was given a steroid shot in my right hip. Today I am worse. I can't walk. How long does it take for bone pain to dissipate after stopping Fossomax? Is there anything I can do to reduce the severity of pain? (am alternating Tylenol, Advil, and aleve). Please help if you have any advice.

My Dr recommended Fosamax but I'm extremely afraid to take it due to the side effects you are mentioning. I wish I could offer help. Please keep us posted on your progress. Thanks.
