Bone Marker test prep

Posted by hungrybirder @hungrybirder, Dec 24, 2024

Just a quick question about prepping for the bone marker blood test. I know it should be done early and fasting, my question is related to no calcium for 24 to 48 hours. Does this include calcium in food, such as milk, or just supplements?

I would ask the physician who has ordered the blood test or CALL THE LAB who will be conducting the test. They will look at the order.

Hi @hungrybirder I'm not sure about calcium. There was a post discussing the preparation for bone turnover markers' testing, hope it's helful:

Personally I try to get the lab done before 8:30am and be consistent timewise with each subsequent testing. I also read recently that alcohol intake might affect the btm lab results. The author of the publication suggests to refrain from alcohol for 2 days if one is a social drinker, and to refrain from heavy drinking for one month prior to bone marker testing.

Definitely double check with the ordering physician.
