Bleeding from the incision after RARP

Posted by shalom7777777 @shalom7777777, 18 hours ago

Hi friends, my husband had RARP this monday and Surgeon said the surgery went super well with no concerns whatsoever. He was fine in the recovery but after he was shi.fted to the room (was asked to move himself fron the stretcher to the bed) and started experiencing pain in a couple of surgery incisions. He was given pain killers and put to sleep. Tuesday morning just before he was being checked for discharge the nurse found moderate bleeding from one of the main incisions. Surgeon came to see him and said it was quite common. But he continued to have the bleeding though the day and this evening was given medication to thicken his blood. Will have to wait and and see till the morning of wednesday. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Nurse said maybe one of the internal stitches has split open and the Junior doctor who checked on him later said maybe a blood vessel had trouble healing.. very stressed and worried..

His haemoglobin was checked and is still good. His vital signs all good.

I am so sorry to hear that : ((. My husband did not have any bleeding from incision sites so I have no idea if that is normal. It probably depends of type of stitches and if any special dressing was applied on top of them. Just try to keep area dry and well ventilated and clean and hopefully bleeding will stop soon spontaneously 🍀🍀🍀.
Sending you healing vibes and best wishes for fast and complete recovery ✨✨✨💗

I had to spend an extra night in the hospital since one of the drains kept filling with blood.
Even at discharge and drain removal it was oozing a bit.
Everything resolved in a day or two, but be SURE you monitor this. You should not have bright cherry red blood leaking out for more than a day or two.
Also, NO STRAINING ON THE TOILET!! I did real damage and had to have another surgery to repair my urethra/bladder. Best,
Phil

I never had any bleeding from my incisions after RARP. The surgeon says it’s common, but I have not heard of it being a problem from anybody before and I hear from an awful lot of people that have had an RARP.

Maybe a little bit of bleeding is common but definitely sounds excessive.

I would not worry, between the blood thickener, and the fact that incisions are relatively small, the problem should go away real soon.

Thank you Surfer, Phil and Jeff for replying. This morning the bleeding had stopped and there was only dry blood the doctor who checked him said. He is back home today and resting. Finds it hard to get up from lying position but once he is up he is able to walk and take care of his toilet. Actually the surgery was slated for November 3rd, but we were suddenly offered a slot for this monday just 3 days earlier on Friday and we grabbed it. So that cut short the waiting by about 2 months. Grateful for that.

Four days after I had my surgery, I was at 3 client’s offices working on their computer problems. I took it real easy, but had no problem moving around or driving there. It just got better after that.

The surgery doesn’t really handicap you for long, though I was 62 when I had it done and being somewhat younger can help.

None of my clients knew I had surgery and that I had a catheter in for two weeks.
