Is breast cancer surgery done at the same time as biopsy?

I would like to have my biopsy done at Mayo. I will be traveling quite a way. If I need surgery. Would I be able to have it during the same visit?

That is a very hard question to answer. Do you already know for sure you have cancer?

Based on my experience, here is what you can expect, but every person's situation is different:
- Initial appointment in breast clinic
- Imaging scheduled, this might be mammograms', ultrasound, MRIs . Hopefully they can get those done same week. If you have images from another location and provider does not need additional images, they may be able to schedule a biopsy after first appointment.
- Depending on location that needs to be biopsied, this might be done as ultrasound assisted biopsy or MRI assisted biopsy.
- Then based on results, your breast clinic provider discusses the best treatment plan for your diagnosis.
- If surgery is necessary, an appointment is scheduled with surgeon.
- You meet with surgeon about options, type of surgery, etc...
- If surgery is decided, then a surgery date is scheduled and any additional pre-surgery appointments are scheduled.

How fast all this happens depends on availability of appointments, type of breast cancer, if there are any other things the breast center provider or surgeon thing need to happen before surgery.

Can you get done in one visit to Mayo? It is possible, but you will not know till meet with specialist.

You can self refer (call yourself for an appointment) or if working with local provider, they can refer you.

When you contact Mayo to set up initial appointment with Breast Clinic, you can ask about the process.

Wishing you the best
Laurie

I agree with everything @roch Laurie said, I would plan ahead with an open ended stay if possible. Many of the places around the clinics plan for this. If you already have a breast cancer diagnosis, you may be able to bring any records with you. I am sending you a link to request an appointment.

Explain what you need, and they will get back to you. How far do you have to travel? Which location are planning for?

Hi @johanna99, how are you doing? Did you have a biopsy? Did you get a diagnosis?
