Let's put together a Barrett's esophagus friendly diet we could download or print off this site. It sure would be nice! Thanks

Yes, it’s kinda like the gerd diet but there are conflicting items they say you can eat like apples that I know are acidic. I’d like a diet list that’s safe to consume.

Read Dr. Koufman's books, particularly "Dr. Koufman's Acid Reflux Diet". She has tips for Barrett's and does not suggest apples for those cases.

Has your BE gone away after taking this omeprazole?

Jump to this post

I don't think it ever goes away, but it has not advanced any and seems to be under control. It;a checked every few years automatically. I get an endo/Colonoscopy because I also ha non-Hodgkins Lymphoms which necessitated the surgical removal of the lower part of my small intestine. Be sure to check your B12 which omeprazole etc. can dampen the production of B12. I get regular shots of B12 in my arm.

Why has there been no mention of omeprazole! I have BE and was advixed to take it many years ago. It’s an over the counter inexpensive medication. No problems since. Have had regular endoscopy/ colonoscopy tests.

@graceandpeace I think I’m a real anomaly. My BE never seems bothered by any food, the only sign of it that I have ever had is hoarseness! That was the first indication. The omeprazole has kept that in check for a long time and my endoscopes have been good but I am getting a little hoarse recently so I am a bit anxious for my endoscopy scheduled in September.

If my endoscopy indicates I need to be more cautious, I will buy that book. Thanks for the info.

A food diary is not overly helpful in my case. My disease progressed from GERD to Barrett's Esophagus because I was asymptomatic. I never knew I had a problem until it was too late. I've read that being asymptomatic is fairly common.

GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) usually has symptoms.. heartburn, indigestion. But it can be silent too. My cause of reflux was a hiatal hernia and as it pulled into my chest pulling my stomach up too and my intestines I had chest pains. .. and pressure, but sometimes there was burning acid.

I have Barrett's also. Diet isn't helping it much. It has disappeared a couple of times over about 30 years, but returns. I had a gastric bypass to fix the stubborn hernia. .. a takedown of a a failed Nissen fundoplication before that to remove mesh and try to repair the hernia.. .. a mess and not enough of the fundus to do another Nissen. Along the way I also developed achalasia … a swallowing problem. Diet for me is that sometimes I can eat something and the next times not… just depends on my swallowing. I eat nothing raw, but ripe bananas. Medications… did it even go down or is it still in my esophagus… sometimes I cannot tell. I have to be careful with medications. Some I can tell I took .. they give a headache or make my head feel a bit weird.

A food journal is still good to have .. also good to add other things going on in the body to the journal and what is going on in one's thoughts. Things going on with the stomach .. or upper abdominal area can be all connected. Pressure in chest, back pain, burping, hiccups … also may effect the lower abdominal region especially the bowels. Aches, pains, non-absorption of vitamins can effect our mood.

I never knew I had BE until I got a bleeding ulcer. When they scoped me they saw the BE. I've been on a low acid diet since. No sign of BE on my last scope so the diet did work for me.

There is no “one diet fits all”. Best way to figure out “what works for you” is to keep a food diary. Make a list of what triggers your symptoms and avoid those foods. Some apples are more acidic than others. Some coffees are less acidic than others. Research low acid foods.

Welcome, Bethany. Do you have any diet or food recommendations?

Everything in moderation. I don't eat fried foods, very limited alcohol use. I add a small salad for dinner and do like my fruit. And try to not overeat. I've never had heartburn just the chest pain which I don't have now.

Yes, I also have Barrett's for over 20 years. Taken Nexium daily. My only symptom was chest pain. Heart and lungs ruled out. On Endoscopy Barrett's was seen. No issues since but followup with Endoscopy every 5 years.
