BCR Post Prostate Robotic Surgery over 3 years?

Posted by Tom @tom86, Jan 10 11:36am

I am fortunate enough to have had my prostate removed over 3 years ago and remain USPSA < 0.01 (undetectable). I am wondering how common this is. Post surgery I had 4+3 GS, T3b Stage, PNI, ECE and was considered 'High Rish' by all testing, including Decipher. Pre surgery PSA was 11. No adjuvent treatment. Any similar experiences? Can I dare to feel this may be behind me? TYIA

Congratulations. I had RALP in Aug 22 and hope to remain BCR free the rest of my life. I was 60 yo at surgery. I guess all we can do is try to lessen our risks by watching our weight. I cut out all lunch meat and eat meat on average 2 days a week only, primarily chicken. I still stress out each time I get a PSA test though. That probably won't change for me .......

This website, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center - https://www.mskcc.org/nomograms/prostate/post_op can give you statistical probability. Keep in mind it is population and historical based. Since treatment possibilities are continuously and rapidly evolving, it may not be "up to date."

Still, it gives you a statistical answer. The question is, does it change anything for you? AFter my surgery in 2014 I entered the data and the nomogram said 30@% chance of BCR. THe optimist says well, that means a 70% chance you won't have BCR, "favorable" odds.

As my clinical history (attached chart) shows, I was in the 30% group. It's why I don't play the lottery, bet on sports, go to Las Vegas...

The key to post treatment from my perspective is to actively monitor, labs and consults with your medical team. Other than that, enjoy life! That's been my approach over these last ten years. I've celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, taken vacations...you should too!

My surgical findings were pretty much like yours. 4+3, pT3b, seminal vesicle invasion, cancer extending to margins in several loci, undetectable PSA after 8.7 @ time of surgery. From the predictive studies I've seen, the possibility of recurrence is greater than zero (altho quite low), so I feel this is something I will carry with me till the end.

Celebrations are in order with each passing PSA test < 0.02...

Wonderful to hear. When was your surgery? I did have clear margins. It seems as though the one constant is all of us is different no matter how similar. Best going forward!

My understanding is 30-40% of all men have BCR at some point. The encouraging thing is only a very small percentage of men actually die from this disease. That would indicated that BCR is survived by most.
