Barrett’s esophagus

Posted by jvanstratten @jvanstratten, Mar 22, 2018

Looking for info and help with Barret’s esophagus. I can’t figure out just how serious this is. I have read way too much online! I don’t really know how strict my diet really has to be. It is really stressful-. Does anyone here have it? And exactly how serious is it?

Why is there so little discussion about omeprazole? I have Barret’s , had it for years. Diagnosed by a gastroenterologist who prescribed it. Been taking it for years. No change in the Barrett’s. It’s the generic form of Prilosec. My insurance covers it.

I was given prescription for it but side effects were bad so didn’t take.

I can't tolerate most wine, but I do sip Moscato with a flavored seltzer or tonic (about 1/2 & 1/2) I also can enjoy a good Gin & Tonic with lots of lime syrup and a bit of spearmint extract. After all the whole idea of being as healthy as possible is To Live Life! a tip I learned years ago also is to start every morning with a bowl of real oatmeal that has some grated ginger, cinnamon and a few raisins or walnuts. Keeping a "regular" digestion helps with reflux symptoms. Enjoy your cruise!

I thought all alcohol was a no no for those with PN. Thought the alcohol damages the sheathing of nerves.

That's exactly what I was suggesting to Aunt, who said she was purchasing Prilosec over the counter.

In The Acid Watcher Diet, Dr. Aviv says absolutely no wine, but gin and certain vodkas, e.g., potato based vodkas, are okay. I think I read that tequila is okay too, but I'm not sure. Check it out for ourself.

Freudian Typo - should be "yourself."

Very interesting! I’m going to try learning more about this Acid Watching. It may be a solution to the side effects of taking omeprazole, one of which may be damage to the nerves.
I’m also interested in learning about what happens to the digestion process when you reduce the acid which is a necessary part of digestion. This sounds interesting and may be a way to wean myself off taking omeprazole. Thanks for your insight.

I'm glad you found my comments useful. I'm going on three cruises (two postponed due to Covid) within the next year, and I'm trying to learn what I can eat and drink in small amounts without causing a resurgence of my Barrett's Esophagus. It's wonderful to share information with others who are going through similar experiences.

That's what I have been told too but I have silent reflux so I can't tell.

I agree with you!!!
. I had no pain or heartburn symptoms initially but after undergoing and ECG for eosinophilic esophagitis then I was diagnosed with Barrett's. Have been doing some reading on the internet and if one EE BE might be forthcoming or a part of it. However, I personally do not smoke or drink and from what I have read both of these lifestyle patterns greatly increase the chances of esophageal cancer. I have been taking omeprazole for about 5 years and it is wreaking hell with my bone density and kidneys. What to do? Is anyone in the same boat? I have read that even if diagnosed with Barrett's there is only a 1/2 % of getting diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

I have BE but can’t take PPIs or H2 Blockers. I’ve developed a cough. How do I treat it?

I take pantoprazole in the morning and also creon for pancreas divisum. I take two pills before I eat and one pill before a snack.

For the past week I have had a burning in my throat. I eat bland food,no spices, lemons, salt or pepper. Has anyone else experienced this before?

Going back to my gastroenterologist in a couple weeks.

I was diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus in Dec. 2022 at age 41. To be frank, I'm very concerned. For one thing, I have it at a relatively young age, and I am underweight. Neither of these traits is typical of people who get Barrett's. If anyone here is in a similar situation and has any insights/experiences/tips to share, please do.

Also, I have 2 questions:

1. Should I get a biopsy?
The 2 doctors I have talked with so far did not bring up the biopsy. They only told me to have the yearly endoscopic surveillance and not to worry too much, but I'm skeptical.

2. Should I start taking PPI?
Currently, my symptoms are fairly manageable. Heartburns are occasional and not severe. More of an annoyance than pain. I've made lots of changes to my diet and lifestyle since I was diagnosed with BE 2 months ago, and I'm planning to take another endoscopy soon. I know that BE will never go away but if the next endoscopy shows some improvement in other areas of my esophagus, e.g. in areas that are still in the inflammation stage, would it be reasonable to try to manage my BE & acid reflux by dietary and lifestyle changes alone? Or is it too risky to live a life without PPI once BE is formed?
