Bad orthotics - cause misalignment of body and extreme pain!!

Posted by swimming @swimming, Nov 12, 2022

Hi

I got custom orthotics made as I have NO fat left on top or bottom of feet. Right orthotic was not right so they shaved some material off. After wearing orthotic I noticed my foot turning. Extreme pain in back hip foot, etc.

I can’t find a dr who can make orthotics for fat pad atrophy that can fit in my shoe correctly. They try and adjust and this is what happens

Help!!!

Can’t drive, barely walk

No life at 50

@swimming When I needed new orthotics after hip replacement, my long time podiatrist who was a wizard at making & adjusting them had retired. My first new ones were actually painful, kind of like you are describing.

Then, when I was having rehab therapy for other hip related issues, the physical therapist sent me to a prosthetics clinic, where they made orthotics for people with complex problems. They were able to make & fine-tune new orthotics for me. (I own 2 different types now.) I do not have "fat pat atrophy", but I do have arthritis & bone spurs in my feet. My favorite orthotics are made from carbon fiber (like Kevlar) and cushioned with a thick memory foam. I wear them in boots, athletic & hiking shoes and they really help.

Can you find a prosthetic clinic near you?

You might love Fit Flop shoes and sandals. You imprint in them and they correct the differential from one side of the body to the other. My daughter in law nurse put me on to them decades ago and I wouldn’t wear anything g else. After each knee or hip replacement I’d buy new ones to take to the hospital for the new imprint. The clogs are used widely by the medical community !! They are also on Amazon!

I just bought a pair of Fit Flop shoes because I was told they would help lower back pain. Please explain what is meant by imprinting in them and how one does that. Thank you

You imprint by walking in them for a few days.! Your body weight imprints in the footbed by using them. No one else should use them or that imprint of weight distribution will change to them!. You should feel your posture self correct nearly immediately as the shoe bed throws you into alignment and your rounded posture straightens right up. It has a wobble board….round disc that you see in the heel on the bottom, and that wobble board keeps you from tipping from left to right. And it actually does! The depth of the Fit Flop sole, and NOT the thin soles which they have, but the dense deep bottoms of the originals, act like shock absorbers for your entire body! I just walked a mile on concrete and don’t even feel it because of the effect of the shoe’s bottom! I hope that helps! I just told my pharmacist as he asked how I had such great posture…..it’s the shoes!…..the mens shoes are equally amazing! My husband was supposed to have a spinal fusion, but I begged him to get mens FitFlop shoes first. That was 10+ years ago and he never had to have the surgery and he doesn’t get out of bed without them on either!…..neither do I! Slippers boots clops you name it…..they all come from Fit Flop! Never seem to wear out either and just enjoy them ! They are truly game changers in life!

@terrirussell I’m just now reading your post Re: Fit Flop. I have severe pronation on my left foot and have to wear custom made orthotics. I cannot walk without them. Interesting concept and wondering how they would work with my problem foot. I also have fat pad atrophy so have to also wear heel cups as cushioning. Some days it feels like I’m walking on rocks.
