Asymmetric diabetic neuropathy may not be diabetic neuropathy after al

Posted by madmouse43 @madmouse43, 1 day ago

I have seem podcasts and posts verified by 2 different PCPs that if neuropathy is asymmetrical (e.g. manifesting in only one foot) that what it may actually be caused by is damaged or pinch nerves in the lumbar region of the back which is radiating down to the feet. I am told that this may be "fixable" where diabetic neuropathy is non-repairable. There is a test called a nerve conduction/EMG which I am told is not very pleasant. I am planning to bite the bullet and get the test because neuropathy is also not very pleasant. I also believe that I may have both as I have some symmetrical pain that is quite mild in comparison to my asymmetrical pain.

@madmouse43, I was diagnosed with idiopathic small fiber PN with the nerve conduction test (EMG) and didn't think it was painful but a little uncomfortable. Some blood labs along with a physical exam by a neurologist was also part of the diagnosis for me. Have you had MRIs of your spine to confirm a damaged/pinched nerve as a possibility?

@johnbishop
Haven't had the MRI working solely at this point with my neuropathy being asymmetrical. The VA handles my care and still waiting to get the EMG test scheduled.

If you have Irish Ancestory high feritin levels cause a host of issues in the body.
Condition called hemochromatosis (2 primary gene mutations, others in transport and storage of Fe)
Even with only 1 gene you can have feritin issues.
Get checked.

I have had 2 EMG diagnosed idiopathic neuropathy,
I was overdosed on gabapentin which caused widespread neuropathy.
As far as no cure, my wife a diabetic has used tens treatment that worked and I have used anydene light pads that worked, however both must be repeated, but NO drugs.
On the pinched nerve, I also have hemochromatosis (gene mutation that causes too much ferritin [Fe]) and related CPPD (calcium poly propinate deposits) because of my Irish ancestry.
If you have bone/nerve conduction issues the treatment is different than normal bone deposits in joints.

@daveyc you sound very knowledgeable. My good friend of Irish decent has issues with high iron and joint pain in her knee. She is in her thirties with a Hashimoto’s diagnosis as well. Do you have any other good information about how to cope?thank you in advance
