Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) of SABR study: anyone in Mayo study?

Posted by daveslp @daveslp, Oct 13 11:33am

Greetings. I'm planning on SBRT 5 session treatments next month at Mayo in Rochester and have an option of joining the ART of SABR clinical study. Depending on which group I am in, I would either get the SBRT 5 sessions as planned or get 2 sessions using the ART of SABR approach. (I am Gleason 3+ 4 and 4 +3, PSA 6.6 and PET scan indicated no evidence of metastatic spread.) Has anyone been a part of this clinical trial? If so, what has been your experience? Thanks!

I have read a little about it and it seems it is using real time imaging to adjust for anatomical changes and compares 5 sessions with 2 sessions. I had a 5 session treatment with real time imaging (the Mridian machine but the Elekta Unity is another machine with that capability). Real time imaging helps the doctor treat what they see, in real time. It also generally allows for less, healthy tissue to be exposed to radiation.

Following. Curious to understand the equipment used for “ARM I” in this trial, as it is not specifically stated other than Cone-Beam computed topography, relative to existing lower margin radiation therapy equipment and Mayo’s standard SBRT equipment.

"...ART of SABR "approach. Dr, Google showed the above inquiry. I also found 'spiritual perseverance' in one of the desert religious traditions. It is helpful at the beginning of new threads and 'as needed' (prn LOL) to spell out the full English and then acronyms, abbreviations, etc. in parentheses.

Hi Daveslp - I am in the Mayo "Art of SABR" trial. I liked the idea of something that used more precision in delivering the radiation but was admittedly uncertain about only needing two SBRT treatments (i.e., fractions) to be effective.

So I did a little snooping around and found other highly reputable prostate cancer hospitals (e.g., New York University Langone Health) that talked about their own similar SBRT two fraction treatment type of clinical trial. That impressed me enough to enroll into the Art of SABR trial.

A few days after my enrollment, however, I was randomized into the five fraction, standard treatment "control" arm of the study. Aw well...

Good point: ART of SABR = Adaptive Radiation Therapy of Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy
