Anyone on IVIG? What helps get recurring pneumonitis under control?

Posted by ralpg2024 @ralpg2024, Oct 23 10:16am

I was diagnosed with SCLC in June, 2024 and had chemo, radiation and Durvalumab. I have had 3 bouts of pneumonitis and have been taking steroids. It was decided that recurring pneumonitis was a side effect of Durvalumab and last treatment was in May, 2025. I am looking at IVIG therapy to get the pneumonitis under control and to get off the steroid roller coaster. If on IVIG, how have you felt, side effects, issues?

Hi @ralpg2024, while not related to chemotherapy treatment, you might be interested in this discussion that @kpger started in the MAC & Bronchiectasis support group.

Ralpg, did you talk about IVIG with your oncologist?

Hi. I get IVIG monthly for an autoimmune disease. I have not experienced any problems with it and it’s helped the autoimmune. It’s the only thing that works for it. Was diagnosed with NSCLC in April 2023.

Do you go to an infusion center or have in-home infusions? Was it difficult to find an infusion center near you? Do you also continue to have cancer treatment while on IVIG? Thanks!

Hi. My only NSCLC treatment is a targeted therapy called Tagrisso. I’m on Medicare and for some reason they won’t pay for in-home infusions. Mayo Clinic in Phoenix has two infusion centers. So, that’s where I go. Where are you located? What does your insurance cover?

Have you had pulmonary function tests? If so, was there any mention of "restrictive" disease - that would be Interstitial lung disease-pulmonary fibrosis. Also CT scan reports will indicate fibrosis.
Lung cancer therapies are known to cause pneumonitis, and the risk is much higher in patients with ILD/pulmonary fibrosis.
