anyone have MEDULLARY CARCINOMA?

WHILE REMOVING A MASS ON MY THYROID, small medullary carcinoma was found. I do want another cut to the neck especially so soon.
Are there alternatives?

Didn't your doctors check for any cancer before removing the mass? Seems as though they would since most thyroid masses are suspicious. I know that during some thyroids surgeries they will check for cancerous tissue before they finish, and if found do what is deemed necessary before they close up. I have read that this type of cancer is best treated by removing the entire thyroid. I am facing total cancerous thyroid removal myself in the immediate future , so I am in a similar situation. Not fun!- Wish you well!

My sister was 27 when she found a hard growth in her neck and had a thyroid lobectomy. After closing her up, they determined it was cancer and had to go back in to remove the other lobe and complete a full thyroidectomy. She had radiation treatment and went on thyroid medication which is for life. This was over 30 years ago so advances in surgeries and treatments have improved. Even after thyroid removal, you will want to make sure to get regular ultrasound of your neck because thyroid tissue/cells can regrow.

I had a 2.5 cm nodule found incidentally on my right lobe when getting a ct scan for something else. I was 53 at the time. They did an ultrasound, graded the nodule, did a fine needle aspiration and determined the nodule was suspicious. I had my right lobe removed and the large nodule was benign but they did find a micro cancer. I have a macro calcification on my left lobe and it is being monitored with ultrasound. I’m did not need radiation but they confirmed I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis after pathology completed. I take levothyroxine for hypothyroidism since my left lobe does not make enough thyroid hormone on its own.

Did you have ultrasound, fine needle aspiration and molecular testing done before your surgery? If they found cancer in your thyroid, you want the whole thing out as soon as possible. You do not want it to spread and you may need to start radiation/chemo as soon as possible. If it was me, I would want it out yesterday!
