Anyone have a positive Cologuard test?

Posted by dazlin @dazlin, Nov 21, 2019

My test results came back positive. I asked what did it show, because they test for 11 different cancers or categories. They said, it just states either negative or positive for cancer. I had problems a few years back and did a colonoscopy, which came back ok. Now this!! I'm reading theres a 13 percent chance of false positive. Right now I'm extremely distraught about having to go through all Consults, tests, and dreaded preps. Orders are in for Consult with gastro, but they're booked out through January or February in Mayo. I have not received any notice for appointment yet. Dont know what to think or do.

I received notice on Saturday that I had a positive Cologuard and have been struggling with horrible thoughts ever since. I cant seem to calm my mind or worry and am just a mess! I know I shouldnt jump to any conclusions yet but its so hard not to. What if I am one of the unlucky ones? I am 45 with no symptoms. I have an appt with the dr tomorrow to talk about scheduling a colonoscopy but I just need some reassurance. Its hard to function and work and take care of a family and household with all these horrible thoughts running through my mind. I wish I hadnt done the Cologuard and did the colonoscopy instead. I wouldve saved myself so much anguish and sleepless nights. It does help to read through all these comments though. I have gone to it several times since Saturday to try and make myself feel better!

@colesnotknappin, have you had the colonoscopy? How are you doing?

REPLY

Yes, mine came back positive. Had the dreaded colonoscopy and get removed 5 polyps that were tested and were non-cancerous at this point. It is difficult to calm your mind. Take it one day at a time. I would suggest you get the colonoscopy.

Hi! I did a cologuard test back in December of 2022. It came back negative! In March I had surgery to remove what I thought was hemorrhoids. It turned out to be anal cancer. The worst day of my life was waking up from surgery and my husband telling me I had cancer. I have gone through chemo and radiation which was the hardest and toughest thing I have ever done! I survived and will be getting my petscan in 10 days to show I am cancer free! I am praying of course as they say my chances are 65/35% chance they got it all! I know this is very scary for you! Praying your colonoscopy shows no cancer but please know there is life after cancer!

My wife age 61 in FL went to a new Doc in Fl about 18 months ago. She had the usual blood work, chest E-Ray and Cologuard test. She went back the following week and all tests were negative but Cologuard test not yet received. They were to call when results came in. About 2 months late my wife realized she had not heard about colorguard results and called the Doctors office and told they could not locate them but would call back. They never did and she forgot about and I assumed they must have been negative. Two months ago she goes for OB/GYN check up and was having issues with abdominal pain, and various symptoms related to female problems and a compete hysterectomy was planned for 7/3/23. The OB/GYN's office sent for medical records from the Doctors office that did the cologuard and in my wife's records found a positive cologuard test from about 18 months back. That Doc that did that had the cologuard records all the time then called yesterday (a trying to CYA call) and said she had called my wife and told her the result were positive which was a lie, as you do not forget a call like that. Nor would I, as my wife would surely have told me. Anyway, OB?GYN surgery postposed awaiting a colonscopy. Since symptoms of female issues can be similar to colon cancer issues we are obviously concerned. How much of a problem could that 18 month delay cause if it is cancer? We are assuming very big since early detection is the biggest life saver for this type of cancer. Very concerned couple!

Wondering if your wife received a letter from Colorguard saying that her test results were positive. know that I did. And made plans for a colonoscopy. It was my understanding that my primary care doctor received the notification also however they did not notify me of the positive test results.
Always good to follow up for yourself.
I don't follow that no news is good news.
Follow up myself.
Hope all goes well.

I had abnormal Cologard test at 66. I had never had a screening colonoscopy. I was scared to death about the result. Had Colonoscopy and they found some polyps and minor hemorrhoid. Don’t panic, in most cases it’s not a cancer issue.

Terrible that we try a test that to me Cologuard is inaccurate. Then we have to go through the colonoscopy .

I have had at least1 barin swallow also known as a esophagogram test when I was very young. I have a very slow digestion system. I then had later on at least 2 colonoscopy and 1 endoscopy years ago. I was on
Omeprazole 20mg a day for over 35 years. Just finally was able to get off it. Last time I had a colonoscopy I wound up in hospital because they said I had diverticulitis which was almost right after the last colonoscopy. I did the Cologuard test because I didn’t want to wind up with that intrusive colonoscopy again with a problem. Cologuard came back positive. So as for cologuard I’m done with their statistic driven FDA approved kit test ever again. So far still waiting to hear if my colonoscopy a week ago which according to the doctor was good. Still waiting to hear if positive or negative.

I had a positive Colorguard too. Had a colonoscopy and it was a benign polyp. But it was near the appendix and it was a flat polyp. It was scraped and biopsied. Typically polyps that are located there are only found during an autopsy according to my research. Have to go for another colonoscopy in September.
I also had a colonoscopy 5 years ago.
Try not to worry know it's hard. I may have had this flat polyp for some time no way of knowing. Prayers

The way Cologuard advertise the test is very misleading. This is pasted directly from the first statement on their current website...

"Cologuard finds 92% of all colon cancers. Cologuard is the first and only test that looks for both abnormal DNA and blood in stool. Other tests only detect blood".

Many read this as a positive test means you have a 92% chance of having colon cancer. At least I did, as did my wife. Thus we are still worried despite this site greatly helping the worry level with so many NOT having cancer but a positive Cologuard test.

In my wife's case where we were not notified of the positive Cologuard until 18 months later, I would think the prescribing Dr. who dropped the ball, better hope no cancer is found. If so, it would seem that any polyps or cancer would have had 18 additional months to grow undetected. I assume that is a long time with colon cancer.

I had a positive coloaguard test as well. I had a colonoscopy and I had two benign polyps. I read a study that said out of 450 positive cases, only 2% were positive for cancer. The stats that colaguard gives are skewed in their favor. Try not to worry too much. I’ll be praying for you guys

Stay positive and find a provider that can perform the colonoscopy as soon as you can. Take a positive and proactive approach and you'll feel better
