Any Treatments For Arthrofibrosis In The Knee? Please, I’m Desperate

Aloha, my name is Matthew, I’m 28 years old and currently live in Oahu, Hawaii. I’ve had ongoing knee issues (both) for the past 4-5 years and have not been able to work since then. I tore my meniscus about 5 years ago for the 1st time and I had no idea. I went on a hike later and it started hurting to the point that I could no longer walk on it. I leaned all my weight on my good leg to make it back to the car and ended up tearing the other one as well. When I went to the hospital, they didn’t give me an MRI because they said it wasn’t necessary, gave me ibuprofen with some stretches to do and told me to walk it off which ended up making it 10x worse.

After a while I finally went back to the doctors because the pain got to the point I couldn’t walk so they finally gave me an MRI. I had torn both my meniscus (inside and out on both knees) and diagnosed with IT band syndrome on both knees as well. For years after that I’ve had ongoing issues with my knees and severe pain on the inside and outside of my knees that just continued to get worse every year. I’ve received different diagnosis’s from different doctors within the same hospital (Kaiser). Some saying it’s my meniscus, some saying it’s my IT band, some saying it’s my LCL, but none of them giving me solutions because they said I had “too many tears” in my knees for them to confidently operate on.

The amount of times I have torn both my meniscus’ since the 1st original injury is in the double digits. I’ve been in a wheelchair twice from the pain and I’ve also tried physical therapy which ended up tearing both of my meniscus again from stretching too much.

I finally ended up paying out of pocket for stem cell injections to grow back the muscle/ cartilage that was lost and did 3 rounds of injections for $18,000. It healed the tears, and my last round of injections were about 2 months ago, but now my knees are CONSTANTLY tight (especially on the meniscus/ inside of my knees and wraps around the back) and I can no longer walk because I feel a ripping sensation every time I stand for too long, walk, drive or try getting out of chairs or my bed. After the ripping sensation, it starts to swell in the inner parts of both my knees and wraps behind it and they start to feel hot.

If someone can PLEASE HELP ME and point me in the right direction because I desperately want my life back. I no longer have a life anymore and can no longer have a job or live normal life because of the constant knee injuries. I used to be a personal trainer but now I can’t even go for a walk around my block without getting hurt.

My doctors have never once suggested arthrofibrosis once and has continuously told me that they “don’t know what to do” so they prescribed me pain killers and sent me to pain management to. They’ve confirmed that I have scar tissue in my knees but have always told me “it’s nothing to worry about.” I had to find out about Arthrofibrosis myself and I have all of these symptoms EXACTLY.

Are there any surgeries, surgeons or ANYTHING AT ALL that someone could please suggest that would help? Please, I’m desperate.

Please ask for my contact info if you have anymore questions or would want to talk on the phone or email. Thank you in advance!!

See if your institution participates in cloud-based data exchange. Also try to see if there is an institution "second opinion" that you can register and speak to a healthcare advisor/provider.

Meniscus tears are fairly common. You are young to have experienced as much damage. I think the suggestion mentioned about meniscus transplant is really innovative - but not what your immediate need is.

As I mentioned, another opinion can be obtained. There is a great read: "IT's About Patient Care" by Harris and Lazuta. It goes into depth how one health care institution has approached providing distance consulting.

I have had my share of meniscus damage but not as young. Glad to hear the PRP helped. Something tells me that you might have calcification build up in your muscle/tendon tissue as well. (I am not a doctor-so I highly suggest you consult to get more answers).

Lots going on - but lots to look forward to. Keep moving and be positive!

I feel for you from experience. Look up The Stone Clinic in San Diego California.
Dr Stone and his team are cutting edge on knee issues. Also, Mexico and Europe are not bound by the FDA and are way out in front of US treatment
