Any success in using N-Acetyl Cysteine for neuropathy?
Hi all, I have scalp dysesthesia and am looking at supplements that may help. I found several sources that say that taking N-Acetyl Cysteine may help. Has anyone found this useful for any type of neuropathic pain (not just scalp)? Thank you!

Hi @stormpassing, I haven't seen any mention of NAC for neuropathy but a quick search of Connect lists a couple of discussions in other groups on N-acetylcysteine (NAC) that might be helpful while you wait for other members to respond.

There does seem to be some research on the supplement:

Do you mind sharing how you heard about the supplement? Did you see some research?
I have used for 14 years for interstitial lung disease twice a day per recommendation Mayo. This first I have heard of this use. I am going to research this
I take NAC to reduce the metals in my blood. I have 2 metal hips (resurfaced) and a partial knee replacement. My cobalt and chromium levels were twice the normal amount. After 6 weeks of taking NAC, my cobalt is in the normal range and my chromium is only slightly above normal. I also have neuropathy in my feet and have not noticed any improvement since starting the NAC. However, I think my neuropathy stems from my severe lumbar stenosis.
NAC can help by inhibiting the activation of several key components of neuropathic pain. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27075430/
I have been taking NAC for years for chronic migraine, memory issues after a brain hemorrhage, and neuropathy. It supplies the body with powerful antioxidants that promote brain health and fight inflammation. It also helps stabilize blood sugars, which is a plus for people who suffer from neuropathy. I rarely take high doses of a supplement, expecting immediate changes. However, taking vitamins or minerals when we are deficient or stop taking something because we have toxic levels will often bring about significant changes. Supplements like NAC and R-ALA work in the background as support systems that help our bodies manage certain disorders.
I heard about it through Donovan hair clinic that stated as potentially helpful for scalp dysesthesia and then I saw a paper on it as potentially useful for neuropathy.
