Yes, there is hope for people diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. (Cancer that has spread beyond the Prostate.) News like this can be overwhelming and scary. You are doing the right thing by reaching out and trying to get help. Your husband’s diagnosis is serious but you are at the beginning of the journey, not near the end.

By now you have probably met with the Urologist and he has recommended treatment options. Most likely the first step is starting Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) to slow the growth of the cancer. This will give you time to decide on your treatment options. I hope he also recommends a PSMA PetScan. This type of test is a full body scan that can detect cancer anywhere in the body with accurate detail.

Once you know the full extent of the disease it will be time to choose the best treatment options for your husband.

I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at the age of 48. Gleason 7 (3+4). I had Robotic Prostate Surgery to remove the gland. I am now 64 and I had a recurrence of cancer that spread to my bladder . Gleason 9 (4+5) I recently went on ADT (Eligard injections with Zytiga) and 37 treatments of Radiation Therapy.

I am 53 years old. I was diagnosed three years ago with a Gleason score of nine did 40 rounds of radiation and Lupron shots every six months and as of now I’m in remission. My last radiation treatment was eight months ago.

Consult with specialist who treats thousands of patients over ten years or more. Try not to read too much into the clinical studies. They are different aims, or outdated. It is apples and oranges.

@hairbrain, I can understand your choice of quality over quantity of time. My dad made a similar choice choosing to stop chemotherapy (colon cancer, not prostate).
