Prostate cancer treatment: Any connection with rise in my ALT and AST?

Posted by graybeard46 @graybeard46, Nov 19 8:13am

Has anyone noticed after prostate surgery, radiation, and 2 shots of Lupron effect your liver ? My ALT and AST have always been in the mid 20 range but recent blood test was 55 and 67. Dr suggested no alcohol for 6-8 weeks and retest ? Thanks G

I think it’s doubtful that the treatments affected your liver function enzymes.
Retesting is the best idea and perhaps looking for other explanations if the levels don’t come down. Serious problems usually result in much higher levels.

Well...yes, I did notice significant increases in my AST and ALT after completing my five SBRT radiation treatments.

I had been in the mid-20's to low 30's ranges for over a decade of consistent lab tests. But one month after completing radiation tests revealed my AST at 66 and ALT at 98 -- huge departures from my usual results.

When I asked my radiation oncologist, she stated it could not be from the radiation since the liver was not near the radiation being applied to the prostate.

Fortunately, my next AST and ALT tests three months later had returned to normal.

@graybeard46 My best guess is that you will be okay.

I can't explain why, but I think our situations probably have something to do with the radiation treatments. I'm betting it's a temporary type of situation.

Yes, my husband’s became elevated during radiation and Lupron. They have stayed elevated with continued Lupron treatment. Liver function is tested every three months on comp metabolic test along with his CBC. I have read that Lupron can cause a rise in liver enzymes and I also questioned my husband’s medical oncologist about them early on in his treatment.

Yes, ADT can significantly increase liver enzyme levels. I experienced this while on Orgovyx.

My husband has mildly elevated ALT and AST, he’s on Orgovyx and Nubequa. Because of this he has temporarily stopped the Nubequa and the liver enzymes are going down. When they return to normal he will start the Nubequa again, maybe at a lower dose.

@suzystation My wife and I have recently found no doctor wants to take credit for any conditions outside of the norm. It's getting ridiculous.
