Antibiotics caused neuropathy and give me anxiety
Hey everyone I wanna share my story. I got diagnose with a respiratory infection on my left upper lung called mycobacterium xenopi after also contacting Covid 19 that actually led me to the hospital and led me to 2 diagnose. Not sure if you guys know about mycobacterium xenopi infection. Fast forward I started to heal from Covid but was still dealing with the bacterial infection as of course it was still there.
On May 20th I got prescribed antibiotics for it. Starting the antibiotics I didn’t notice much. The side effects then come through. I won’t get all over the side effects because that’s a long list but I started experiencing muscle twitches everywhere. Which is a side effect let me point that out. Fast forward that’s when the anxiety kicked in, so I talked to my doctor which they changed isoniazid(antibiotic) to Levofloxacin(antibiotic) to another called Moxifloxacin(antibiotic).
Fast forward, i started experiencing weakness more commonly on my right arm. I remember waking up at about 3am and my whole right arm felt like a shocking sensation, shoulder to fingers. After that my right arm just felt heavy but no loss of function(yet). I scheduled an appointment with a neurologist through my PCP. She did an exam, reflexes and more. I read the report a while back and it said “brisk reflexes” not sure which limb but I do remember seeing my right arm kinda of jerk a little.
Fast forward, I got an eeg test and it was normal, Brian mri was normal as well. Emg/ncs was not normal. This is what creeps me out. The ncs was slightly abnormal but the emg was dirty and that’s not what you want. Also to point out I had gotten 2 ct scan back in may before all this started. One of them says “loss of the normal lumbar lordosis” and “mild degenerative changes in the lumbar spine”. But that was the lumbar spine and I never gotten an ct of my cervical.
The person who did my emg/ncs says “suggest inflammatory myopathy” but the results also says “mild denervation, reinnervation”. I know myopathy doesn’t cause denervation and reinnervation( to my understanding) on the ncs it says “Evaluation of the Left Median D2 sensory nerve showed prolonged distal peak latency”.
Some neurologist that was at the clinic was there and told me about my results(btw this isn’t the same neurologist who did my test) she told me my results and stated I don’t have ALS I got so relieved. But they never actually did a second emg considering the other neurologist stated she wanted a second opinion. The neurologist who told me my results just started what was on the paper and that was it.
Fast forward to today, I still kinda in a way still feel the same but when I move my right index finger the inside of my arm hurts like if I have a nerve pinched or so, same in my left arm but when I move my middle finger. I do have atrophy or muscle loss due to many factors in my head, either the antibiotics did this because I heard about drug induced neuropathy, or the actual infection but weird thing is I never had muscle loss like how I have now. My lower back at times does hurt and my neck feels stiff and at times when I touch it I can soft of hear and feel like if I had broken bones or something. I myself feel like I might have cervical myelopathy but at the same time I don’t know. I’m now kind of experiencing soft of like a burning sensation around my arms and at times legs but not often. Tingling sensation comes and goes but only when I hold my phone and at times randomly but at times. My Balance isn’t very bad but I do feel like at times I feel like I’m off balance or dizzy. Funny enough I felt dizziness due to Covid I believe(vertigo) but it went away.
I go on to say this, I’m a 23 year old male with a history of a heart condition called Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, I never had a family member with ALS and I’m afraid I could be the first one. Sometimes I think that my body had went through a lot and trigger something that caused ALS.
