Anterior and posterior ankle impingement.

Has anyone been diagnosed with anterior and posterior ankle impingement and how was it diagnosed and treated by your orthopedic surgeon?

I haven’t been diagnosed, but have seen my PC twice and an ortho about my ankle pain. The x-rays show no injury. Hmmm…..no one mentioned impingement. I told them my ankle pain feels like a syndrome. I found this piece researching impingement. My pain started after I stood on hard floor at a concert for about 7 hours.

My symptoms are exactly what anterior impingement of the foot. My orthopedic doctor felt it may be a nerve impingement as well, but didn’t label it. I have small fiber neuropathy in my left leg diagnosed by skin biopsies. My neuropathy and leg weakness and numbness along with the paresthesia in the front of my thigh are due to the lumbar stenosis in my spine. All nerve related . I’ll be following up with my orthopedist soon who may order an MRI and possible referral to foot surgeon .

I see. Please post what you discover. I’ve wanted a spine MRI for a while for my intermittent hand numbness during the night and foot paresthesia. The ankle pain is different though. It feels more like a sprain. Thing is, it seems to have improved a lot over the last several weeks.

I hope you can get some answers.

Hand numbness may be from cervical spine pinching a nerve or just positional of your hand when sleeping . Speak to your doctor. Foot discomfort sounds like you need to see a podiatrist, maybe a foot orthotic (insert) may be all the correction you need. Best wishes

Thanks. Yes, my hand numbness is positional. I rarely get it if I sleep on the couch or wear arm braces to bed. Hand specialist suspects carpal tunnel, but not sure. I still want to rule out spine. And, I’ve seen several podiatrists. Most say it’s not neuropathy. Idk. Very confusing. Neurologists say Vitamin deficiency, which has been treated. It hit so fast….right after covid, so…..I do have type 1 diabetes so……could be from that. A mystery perhaps.

My ankle pain has been very different from all the other stuff but could be connected I guess.

Thanks for your tips. I’d think more people would have impingement around here.

A visit to a neurologist to check for carpal tunnel will give you an answer very quickly. When I commented that my PN was affecting my hands, my neurologist immediately checked for carpal tunnel using the electro stimulus methodology. No, not carpal tunnel. I had my answer.

You would think so, but that hasn’t been my experience. The first neurologist said not sure what it was……not neuropathy. EMG negative. No options, nothing changed. Second neurologist thought vitamin deficiency…..no other tests. He’s moved away, but said I should follow up ref possibly carpal tunnel. Rheumatologist unsure. Doesn’t think autoimmune. GP and Ortho said not positive for carpal tunnel, so I saw hand and shoulder specialist surgeon, who treats only hand and shoulder conditions, over 30 years experience and he viewed records, tests, and examined me and isn’t sure if I have it. Wanted to give me cortisone injection in one hand to see if it affects it. I hesitate because it will cause my blood sugar to spike for days! And, it might not work. My SIL had my symptoms, couldn’t get a diagnosis, got cortisone injection and it did nothing for her. Eventually, she just got the surgery on both hands same time and it fixed her problem. No problems since. I’m tempted.

So, I am tired of searching but still want to know if it’s my spine causing it.

So sorry it has been so difficult to determine if it is spinal or carpal tunnel. At least you don't have a definitive diagnosis of carpal tunnel. I wish you had had a more definitive experience.
What was the goal of the surgery on your SIL's hands?

Was diagnosed with PN 4 years BEFORE Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. The neurologist was very confused so I've been on Gabapentin for 22 years. I have it mostly in my feet and a little in my hands.
Then I developed carpal tunnel in both hands and, after putting up with the annoying and uncomfortable nerve twinges in my wrists, I got my awesome hand specialist do surgery on both Then he had to operate on the 3 trigger fingers at different times. Now he's following up on my fractured bone in my left wrist from a fall. If you need a great hand doc, he's your guy ... here in MIAMI!. Do the surgeries you need and live your life!

@joanland, my SIL finally with the surgeon not being sure she had carpal tunnel agreed to do surgery for carpal tunnel anyway. Freed up the thing. And, it worked. Doctor says that confirmed she did have it, though tests were inconclusive.

So, I’m tempted to go ahead with one hand and see if my symptoms resolve.
