Annoying Gas

Posted by judithbramson12 @judithbramson12, Aug 6, 2023

Now that I have gotten food and digestion under control, most of the time. I cannot control or even figure where or why I have continual gas. I have used all the pills, but they don’t seem to work. I must be missing something. Has anyone resolved this issue? My surgery was 8 months ago. Any hints would be most appreciated.

Thank you for reading this!

I too struggle with gas since my distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy in early January, 2023. I always take digestive enzymes before I eat but sometimes it doesn’t help. I read that they last for up to an hour after you take them. If you eat again in say 2 or 3 hours you would have to take another one with your first bite of food. You also have to take them even when eating a small snack or drinking a protein smoothie. I also read that eating smaller meals more frequently might help. Sadly, I have a feeling that this is the new way of life as nothing is going to work as well as our pancreas did prior to the surgery. I’m just thankful I’m not diabetic!

Thank you. I, too, am grateful I don’t have diabetes. I do everything you mention. Guess it’s my new normal. I’m hoping time will bring some changes. It’s good to be alive!😊

Funny how a scary cancer diagnosis such as ours can make us more appreciative of the little things, like not having diabetes or breathing! 🙂

Once I optimized the dosage of Creon, it solved the gas issue. For vegetables that are comprised of oligosaccardies, pancrealipase does to contain the enzyme necessary to digest this class of vegetables like corn, many varieties of beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and others. The OTC product Beano is the enzyme alpha-d-galactosaidas which is the specific enzyme needed to digest oligosaccharides without gas being formed. For gas that has occurred, the OTC products Phazyme and Gas-X will break down the gas and reduce bloating.

There can be a co-morbidity existing in the GI tract such as Lactose Intolerance. A lack of the enzyme Lactase will result in excess gas being produced when consuming dairy. To see if this is the issue, eliminate dairy for a week and keep a food diary of the foods being consumed. if gas stops, the likely cause in lactose intolerance. Eating Lactaid dairy products will prevent gas.

Haha, so true! I’ve just come to accept that a little gas is normal. In fact, after raising boys I guess I just got used to it!! Fortunately it’s a relief when it occurs!
