Alternatives to standard Osteoporosis drugs

Posted by annie1 @annie1, May 19, 2025

Has anyone tried Calciven and did it increase your bone density as effectively as Evenity or Forteo ? My Dr. doesn't recognize any drugs besides the standard treatments. End of discussion. The other major problem is that Medicare may no cover it.

@annie1. I’m unfamiliar with Calciven. Is it a supplement, not medication? It depends on one’s insurance plan but I know that my Traditional Medicare with my Medicare Supplement D (for medications) does not cover supplements.

May I ask your interest in Calciven? Do you know of any research studies comparing Calciven to standard medications?

It's not very expensive. I was just curious if people have had good luck with supplements in improving their bone density.

Would you post some links to the research on this product. Thanks

Calciven is just a supplement you buy. It's a simple mix of calcium, vitamin D3, and vitamin K2. There is nothing special about it. Taking it is not going to reverse your osteoporosis all by itself. It might not even help you stay at your current level, since other factors play into osteoporosis. Every calcium supplement already includes D3, and many people have learned to add K2 to the mix. If all we had to do was to take a vitamin, nobody would have osteoporosis.

And, at $40/bottle for 30 pills, it's totally overpriced. Each pill has 120mg calcium, which is like a quarter cup of milk.

I have been taking Calciven for the past year since being diagnosed with Osteopenia.

Unless absolutely necessary, I tend to avoid medications.

My upcoming bone density test will be a good test case.

I did contact the company directly asking questions. Evidently this product was formulated by a female physician and comes with a money back guarantee.

Will share my test results.

@lisamarechal

BTW: I ordered direct from the manufacturer and it was 30 a bottle.

And for those that are curious it includes K2 mentioned above.

@lisamarechal I don't know anything about Calciven which I presume is a supplement? I did the exercise (weightlifting in particular which I was already doing) and calcium supplements when I was diagnosed with osteopenia. Unfortunately it eventually progressed to osteoporosis. I avoided medications as long as possible until I had a fracture. My endocrinologist told me that it was clear I was doing everything I could but the fracture changed that. He recommended medication so that's what I did. My bone density results attest to the positive outcome.

Yes, please share your test results. When will you have your next bone density exam?

@naturegirl5 Hope you don't mind a couple questions. What kind of movement or fall caused your fracture? What medication did you start with and what kind of DEXA improvements did you have? Thanks.

Calciven is nothing more than a combination of calcium, vitamin D3, and vitamin K2 - mostly D3 and K2. There is nothing special about it, and given that it costs $40 for a month's supply, it's very expensive.
