Allergic to Water?

Posted by ninanina @ninanina, Mar 19, 2023

Hi, over the past year I have been getting frequent headaches which at the start of this year became debilitating migraines where I'm bedridden and painkillers don't work.
At first I thought the initial headaches were because I have Adipsia (self diagnosed) and I'm frequently dehydrated because I do not ever get thirsty and don't drink enough.
But I have noticed that when I drink water it triggers these migraines along with very mild aching in my kidneys. I've tried drinking spring water, tap water, I've stopped drinking out of plastic bottles. I've tried drinking regular amounts or slowly increasing, with/without food. Small sips throughout the day.
The only thing that relieves my pain is when I drink pretty much nothing.
Recently I drank 2 mugs of tap water a day for 2 weeks, ( I know, I know, it's really bad to drink that little and yes I got a bladder infection/cramps) the migraines were gone and I had SO much more energy!
I've had a blood test to check my kidneys and sodium levels which are fine.

If anyone has any advice or ideas of what's going on I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you!

Nina, have you tried changing the temperature of your drinking water.? Sometimes room temperature water may change things for you. I even have a friend who drinks hot water boiled in a kettle as though making tea but refraining from putting the tea in the water. She enjoys it after a meal. I know that some people cannot eat ice cream because the cold gives them a headache so that is why I wondered about the temperature of your drinking water.

You do not mention another fluid that you drink? Soda, soups, iced tea, hot tea, etc. If you take meds how do you wash them down? I would think that having inadequate fluid intake would make you a pretty ill person? Not flushing your organs like they’re meant to be with circulating fluid in your blood stream is problematic. Have you had a complete physician exam and associated chemistry blood work? I’ve had patients I’ve cared for over the years who had restricted fluid intake but I’ve not heard of your issue previously. I did find Aquagenic Urticaria an allergy to water with skin symptoms mostly but no headaches. It is rare and you maybe 1 in a million. Hope you’ve found some answers?
