Alendronate (Fosamax) Feeling Crummy Day 1
After a year of Evenity, I am now on Alendronate (Fosamax) to hold in gains. Every Sunday I take the medication but undoubtedly my day is not a good one afterward. I do follow the instructions, drinking a full glass of water on empty stomach and being upright for at least 30 minutes. I usually feel nauseous and tired out. By the next day, am feeling much better. Also I noticed my digestion is much more sensitive on this drug. I no longer eat chocolate or most sweets. It is not worth it. I have IBS and the Alendronate seems to aggravate this. Anyone else experiencing a bad day when taking the medication? Please do not suggest Reclast. I have read too many horror stories and do not want to chance being the unlucky one with horrible side effects.

susanew,
I hate the way Alendronate makes me feel. I have reflux and can't eat chocolate. I have increased joint pain, headache, nausea and now terrible tendonitis. I have an appointment today to bring up some of these issues. I want to try to protect my bones but at what cost.
Let me know if you find a better way to strengthen your bones.

So sorry Katrina that are having these problems. Please let me know your doctor’s recommendations.
susanew,
I thought that I would let you know that I saw my primary care doctor. She said to go off the Alendronate and she referred me to an endocrinologist who can help with the bone density and possibly a thyroid issue. She also ordered several labs for my thyroid since I have had Graves disease and a thyroidectomy. The endocrinologist's office called today to schedule my appointment. This is hard to believe but their first opening is around 6 months from now in April. Hopefully I won't have any broken bones in the next 6 months. That's a long time but at least that will give me a chance to see if it is the Alendronate that is causing the tendon and severe joint pain.
Oh, also my doctor said I am not her first patient to have severe pain from the alendronate. That patient went off the drug and many months later she had a severe fracture.
I am concerned that there may not be a good solution for me. We will see what happens.
I hope someone else has a suggestion for what might help with your issue.

@katrina123 6 months seems like a really long time. Can you ask your PCP for another referral who may have an opening sooner especially if you have osteoporosis and need meds. When I was sent to an endocrinologist, unfortunately she only knew thyroid and diabetes but was not well versed with osteoporosis. Maybe a rheumatologist can assist you with osteoporosis medication. Wishing you the best of luck,
FWIW: I had to go off of Fosamax too due to severe acid reflux after taking it for 9 mos and following the directions exactly. I wasn't able to get into see a Rheumatologist until 4 mos later and didn't start a new med Reclast until 7 mos after stopping Fosamax. I was ok, no fractures. I think the Fosamax stays in your system for awhile? Hope all goes well for you. I have found it's a challenging journey at times, so much to learn. So glad to have found this group!
Dont Forget To Your Dentist You Take This Medication. If You Have Any Dental Surgery You Must Stop Taking It For Awhile. I'm On The Medication Also. No Side Effects.
Yes but only one pill and now over 3 weeks later still having reflux at night. At least it’s only at night now when my stomach gets empty. I get up and have rice banana yogurt.
Were u on the generic alendronate or Fosamax? I read that the generic may not dissolve the same. Has anyone else heard that?
I’m hoping to find what I can take.
I take 1 pill on Sunday when I don't have to go to work when I first wake up. I wait 45 minutes. Then I eat. Dont eat high acid food after taking pill. Maybe that will help ?? Toasted bread if that's your diet. Try taking pill in AM. Good Luck.
