After TKR still have warmth and new pain

Posted by zoobird1 @zoobird1, Aug 29 11:34am

It’s been eighteen months since my TKR and the area around my knee and knee itself is still warm to the touch. In February for my yearly I had bloodwork and everything is normal. (I had the surgery in another state and we’re back home now.)
The large numb areas have reduced to the kneecap and sides and I've started to experience such tightness and pain and the past few days it's been constant. Is it hurting because nerves are still regenerating? I’m getting discouraged.
I treadmill for about 35 minutes 3-4 times a week. Should I stop and rest it for a while?
I've resumed taking 4 mg of Tizanidine at bedtime. My orthopedist here can't see me til mid October. Meanwhile I appreciate any advice.

An orthopedist does the surgery but a physiatrist or neurologist might be a better option for pain eighteen months later. The treadmill work might be aggravating the nerve, so you could also work with a physical therapist.

Have you looked in to getting an MRI to determine if there is something else going on? It seems that I've read so much online about the replacement being too big or too small causing pain so long after the surgery. Good luck!

Sorry to hear you’re in pain …. But for me I have to exercise everyday when I miss I feel tight ….i know as time goes on scar tissue does make it tighter …..you can try myofascial release find someone who is trained by John barnes he was the pioneer …. They have a website you can go on find someone in your area one other thing is Graston technique…. Both of these help with scar tissue …. One other thing you may want to walk at least 1 mile a day just to keep scar tissue from building…..good luck

I’ve felt and can see that it is bigger but was told that was just swelling. An MRI would answer some questions! Thanks!

I should do exercises more often. I do have great range of motion and sailed through rehab. Thank you!
I’ll look into the myofacial and Grayson.

I'm so sorry your knee is still bothering you; I totally get it. I am also about 18 months out with my left TKR and still have some pain. Cannot walk up or down stairs without pain. The numbness is a lot less on the outside of my knee. Xrays show implant is fine.

I had right TKR done in 2009 and it was great for quite a while, then a few years ago, it started hurting a lot, probably due to overuse 'cause my left knee was getting so bad, and I also broke both ankles in 2021 and had additional pressure put on that right knee during rehab. Even with all that, I am grateful to be walking as much as I do.

Are you continuing to do your PT exercises? I find that helps my knee to stay flexible. I guess if I were you, I would ask doc to prescribe PT again to help you get over this hump. Best wishes in your journey to recovery. 🙂

I am so sorry about your pain. I too am grateful to be able to do the treadmill and get around better than before. Interestingly, I broke my ankle in 2020 and still experience some pain but it is lessening.
Thank you and I will resume flexibility exercises. 🌸
