A message for 2023!
Recently, I have shared a story with a nice message for this coming year of 2023 with my group on Mayo Clinic Connect. One of our group's members (@jakedduck1) suggested sharing it also with others on Mayo Clinic Connect (Epilepsy & Seizures) so that more people can enjoy this story and reflect on it.
Here it comes:
An anthropologist was studying the habits and customs of an African tribe. At the end of his work, he proposed a game for the children of the region. He placed a basket full of sweets under a tree and proposed a race, telling the children that whoever arrived first, would take the basket. The children lined up ready to run and when they were ready to run, the anthropologist said go. At this time, all the children joined hands and ran together to the tree and took the basket together and celebrated together. The anthropologist looked curiously at that situation and one of the children said UBUNTU. How could one of us be happy if all the others were going to be sad?
UBUNTU is a word that represents an ancient African philosophy that means: I am who I am, because we are all we. A person with UBUNTU is aware that he or she is affected when a similar one is affected. He or she knows the world is not an island and he or she needs others to be himself or herself. UBUNTU talks about basic respect for others, UBUNTU is compassion, sharing, and empathy. In other words, people need people to be people.
Ubuntu to all of us in 2023!

Thank you so much for sharing this. It is beautiful and echos the words of Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount. To paraphrase “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Ubuntu…humanity…an inspirational start to the new year.
@santosha Well, I have to say that @jakedduck1 was smart to ask you to share this with everyone here! Normally I do not go to the epilepsy and seizures support group, so I would have missed it. The message is timeless.
Thank you @gingerw for your post and comment.
With @jakedduck1 I have learned today how to post to the whole Mayo Clinic Connect "family", I did not know this was possible. A big thank you @jakedduck1 once more.
What a great story and message
UBUNTU! Just beautiful!
Yesterday, I have watched a movie called Mission: Finding happiness in troubled times with Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. Just marvelous!!! Desmond Tutu mentions the concept of Ubuntu.
"A person is only a person through other persons"
" We can be humans only together"
Very worth watching this movie. I got very much touched by many things that both Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu have said.
Two enlightened individuals! There is also a book. Lots of profound lessons and sage advice that comes from the heart with focus on how to live a meaningful life. Not just for self, but for the betterment of all.
UBUNTU story is great! connect at Mayo is wonderful too.
Swedish proverb: Friendship doubles our joy and divides our grief.
May we all share our joys here to raise each other's spirit and share our challenges here to lighten our load. We need balance to keep moving forward so I like some of the chats that are just for sharing fun or inspirational stuff. I also like the connection of finding others with the same medical conditions although we are all connected in that we are all fighting some kind of battle. Thanks to everyone for sharing both your woes and blessings.
Einstein once wrote a long quote. Some parts:
"A human being is part of the whole called by us universe…
Our task must be…to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty".
