Thigh pain 6 months after a fall with no diagnosis or improvement

Posted by gmawvarnum @gmawvarnum, Feb 24 10:31am

I fell at work in Aug 2024. Very large bruising on left thigh and painful. W/ c Dr said it was a hematoma and sent me home, but never even examined it. Went back a month later with a lot of pain. Never touched it , but did do an X ray. Said no damage., it would take time. 6 months later still slot of pain. What might it be?

gmawvarnum, could be a hairline fracture. An MRI would give you valuable information, but even an MRI can miss a hairline fracture that could be detected by a CT.

You may have injured a nerve and/or blood vessel supplying nerves. It may be helpful to see a neurologist for EMG/nerve conduction study and depending on the results, a vein/vascular specialist.

@gmawvarnum Work comp situations are difficult to navigate. You may have scar tissue in the muscle. I would ask for physical therapy. Scar tissue can be stretched out. When you have a hard painful muscle, using a small ball to apply pressure can help break up the fascia scar tissue in the muscle. A PT can advise you on how to massage and work on it.

I had extraordinary thigh pain for months and thought it was my hip. It turned out it was a serious spine problem. My pain sensors just sent the wrong signal.

@marthadean Pain can be felt anywhere along the path of a nerve so it is true that you could have spine generated pain from a compressed spinal nerve root and feel the pain in your leg. It is also true that you can have more than one source for pain in a particular nerve and doctors have to figure that out before they do a corrective procedure.

it could be anything like above say, also the IT band could be out of place. If you palpate and have a tender spot that tells something. If its painful when walking that tells something. Try a MFR therapist or a pain mgt doctor. But I would return to the doctor first and be referred to a specialist. PT can reveal things too.
