3-year survival rate of those who have had esophagectomies at Mayo

Posted by protonbeam @protonbeam, Feb 1, 2023

My wife has cancer of esophagus. For past 3 years IU Med Center has been lasered out cancer; however, Barrett's high-grade dysplasia keeps coming back. Trying to decide whether or not to switch to Mayo. I hate to seem morbid, but does anyone know what the 3-year mortality rate is for Mayo? I have heard a lot of good about Mayo

I am going on 4 years post surgery and recovered well. Stats can be misleading. My father had his first in 1965 and lived until age 78. I was diagnosed in June of 2020 and had chemo, proton beam radiation, followed by esophagectomy on 9/1/20. The most difficult part was getting used to was eating properly to avoid dumping. Glad to say that only happens rarely now and it is always my own fault for eating too much or eating something I shouldn’t,

@jcrs, Mayo Clinic's proton beam facility at the Jacksonville campus is currently under construction.

If proton beam therapy is recommended by Mayo experts for your husband's care, then the team can work with University of Florida department or Florida patients can choose to have proton beam therapy at the Rochester, Minnesota campus.

Dr. Starr is amazing.

I would like to know too, if FL has Proton Bean Therapy. My husband is switching to Mayo Jax this Fev 2nd, with Dr. Starr. We can't wait for the appointment, since we don't feel comfortable with the treatment he is receiving at Kaiser Permanent.
For us it means that we have to move from West coast to East coast, but he will be treated with cutting edge technology.

Thank you. I have had both radiation and chemo pre surgery. I am currently about half way thru my immunotherapy. I have had several side effects from the immunotherapy, (Opdivo) such as skin rashes, itching, sore joints and arthritis flair ups. But all in all I count my blessings, I am a 2 time cancer survivor. It was bladder about 3 years ago and now esophagus. I wish you all the absolute best. Stay strong keep fighting!! 😃

Mayo Clinic Phoenix, AZ has Proton. I had an esophagectomy in 2012 and am doing great. You can contact Jonathan D'Cunha, M.D., Ph.D. , Consultant and Chair Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at 480-342-2270. He is my doctor and his entire team is renowned for their success at saving lives.
Phoenix was the first Mayo location to install Proton Radiation with the most up-to-date equipment. I'm in healthcare and at 81 still going strong. My name is Paul Williams and I'm a Mayo Clinic volunteer advocate. I can be reached by private message too.
