3 months post TKR road trip

Posted by knighthawk11 @knighthawk11, May 27, 2023

Mid July I will be 3 months post TKR. I am planning a road trip where maximum hours will be 2-3 hours with a few breaks.
I will be sharing the drive with my son.
Has anyone done a road trip at 3 months and how did you make out.
Thanks

I am 3 mths post double knee replacement. Hubby and I just did a 4 hr road trip (1 way) to go visit family in another city. It went well. Just stopped for a bit of a stretch and bathroom break at the halfway mark. Make sure you have a good seat cushion on your seat and perhaps a small block cushion for your foot on the floor, do light stretches or massage your quad muscles while sitting so that they don't get too tight, and you should be good. It was my first big outing since Feb, and it felt so good to go somewhere. Enjoy and good luck.

I think I went on a trip for 2 hours....I'd stop half way just to get out and maybe do a rest stop to stretch it out and walk just a bit. Even at 7 1/2 months I still get sore and stiff if I sit too long. Hoping it goes away by a year. They say 6-12 months. I actually drove at 3 weeks to and from PT and it was 45 minutes one way. I'm sure you will be fine just make sure and stretch about half way.

I am 11 weeks post op TKR and just did a 12 hour drive in one day. My husband and I stopped every hour and a half to walk and stretch. I drove for 2 hours of the trip. When I was a passenger I did a lot of ankle pumps. When we got home my Knee, leg and ankle were swollen but no pain. I iced and elevated and it is back to normal this morning. The previous week we did a two day trip of 6 hours each day. We also stopped frequently. I had no pain or swelling with the shorter amount of time. So we decided to drive straight home on the way back which was our 12 hour trip. In retrospect it probably would have been better to do the return trip in 2 days instead of one. I'm continuing to experiment with how much activity I can do at this point. Hope you have a wonderful road trip.

Thanks for the tips.
I will make sure to do frequent stops and stretches.
Appreciate hearing others stories how it went travelling. It gives me hope I can have a nice trip as this recovery has sucked and it will be nice to have a change of scenery.

I agree with you on that. My recovery has been no picnic. Knees still aren't bending well, and I'm using splints to stretch everything to help break up scar tissue. Good luck with your recovery.

My TKR was almost a year ago. Three and a half months after my surgery, we took a four-hour road trip to North Carolina. The trip went ok, but my knee was stiff and achy afterwards. I did not drive. I kept my foot elevated in the car by putting an old bed pillow in the floor under my feet, and we stopped every hour or so to allow me to around walk for a couple of minutes. I also wore compression socks. I expected my knee would complain, but I wanted to make the trip so badly I didn't care. After the trip my knee was swollen so I had to use a lot of ice packs. But if faced with the same situation in the future I would do it again. You get so tired of being stranded at home! Best of luck on your trip!

Thanks for your share. Yes I feel the same way that it will be worth it as this recovery has been difficult and I really want a change of scenery and will do whatever I need along the way to make myself comfortable 😊

We drove to southwest FL from IL in 2 days. I was 3 months post TKR. I did fine. My husband did most of the driving. We would stop about every 2 hours to walk around and stretch. Good luck and safe travels!
