3 cm mass Esophageal Cancer, what to do now?

Posted by vwinn @vwinn, Nov 12 6:28am

My husband I were in a car accident and when he was evaluated by a CT scan they found areas in the colon, liver and lung. During the colonoscopy they removed 2 polyps and did not feel they were cancer, but sent for testing and it is pending. They then did an endoscopy and found a 3 cm mass and said it was cancer. They are waiting for results to we still need to find out what they want to do or try to find out what is in the liver and on the lungs. We do not know if we should stay with this hospital in Daytona Beach FL or go to another treatment center. We live in Palm Coast FL, but do not know where to go. Any assistance or guidance would be helpful because our world was just put upside down and I am trying to help my husband because he is not in a good place right now.

I'm so sorry to hear your news. It's a shock to the mind and soul. My heart goes out to you and your husband. We're in CT so I'm not familiar with the Florida centers but I know others on the site live in Florida and I'm sure they'll chime in soon. I just wanted to reach out and say you've come to a good place for answers and support. Ask any questions you have. Chances are, someone else has had them too. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 squamous cell EC in 2018, did 2.5 years of chemo and got to remission. After nearly 4 years, he had a recurrence but after more chemo and radiation, he is once again in remission. The docs told him when he was first diagnosed to get his affairs in order. They gave him months to a year. He's still here 7 years later! There is always reason for hope, even when it seems impossible. Take care and best of luck to you both

@cometsmom Thank you for the kind and encouraging words. I hope your husband continues to excel with his health. We think we are going to reach out to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville for treatment. I think the worst part is that we don't know at the moment if the liver and lung are also cancer since the colon was not cancer.

You definitely can’t go wrong by choosing the Mayo. I go to the one in Phoenix and the staff there is absolutely amazing.

Following up on other comments. ABSOLUTELY go to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville!!! It is fairly close to where you live and they are wonderful. I have been getting treated their to make sure my Barrett's and dysplasia doesn't flair up again and the people are wonderful and caring. Mayo is known as one of the foremost cancer clinics in the world. AND if you need a respected and very knowledgeable gastroenterologist ask for Dr. Swathi Eluri. She is wonderfully caring, smart and one of the few specialists in the country who knows ablation treatments. I would also like to add she is "very easy" on the eyes!!! lol.

I agree with the others. Mayo is the best. You can call them and set up an appointment by yourself. They put a team together for you and they put you through a bunch of tests in the beginning but that is because they are so thorough. We were scared to death when we first went up there but once you know that they truly care about your well being it puts your mind at ease. You will then know that you are in the right place. Good luck

Thank you for your comments. Now that this is open season for my health insurance I will have to find out which is the best plan for the Mayo clinic.

They do not accept Medicare Advantage plans.

We have Federal Employee FEHB and currently have BC/BS Basic (113) but looking for a different plan now during open season that will be good for his treatments.
