2nd PSMA Pet scan

Posted by Roxy2017 @roxy2017, 2 days ago

I had a PMSA Pet Scan on 3/5 that lit up my prostate ( biopsy on 1/30 was Gleason 8), one lymph node right by the prostate, one small iliac spot and one much fainter rib spot. Did radiation for the prostate and lymph node in May and on Orgovyx and Xtandi. PSA is now undetectable. Decided to go with another PMSA Pet scan. Trouble is that appts on the scanner I had for the first scan aren't available until late October. I can get on another scanner at another facility they use next week. Radiation oncologist recommends taking the appt next week. But I read online about variability of scanners. What route should I take? TIA

If your PSA is undetectable, it is unlikely the PSMA PET scan will find anything unless you have a really major metastasis. I’m surprised they’re even considering it was such a low PSA.

Thanks Jeff. I expressed my concern about the two suspicious bone spots that had not been radiated and cases I had read about where PSA was undetectable yet there still was cancer. BTW my PSA highest value was 6.4 before treatment so on the low side for the amount of cancer, if that matters.

My MO told me that if I am undetectable, insurance will not cover PSMA PET scan because it probably wouldn’t pick anything up/waste of money.

I mentioned that to others, that if you’re undetectable like I am, we can’t get a PSMA pet scan, Only huge metastasis would show up. I know somebody that gets it at .2 every three months.

The only options at this time are a bone scan and a CT scan, which is what I just had.
