16 months post-op TKR. Chronic pain all the time, clicking/popping

Posted by fancynancy614 @fancynancy614, 5 days ago

I had a TKR on 2-13-24. I haven’t had 1 minute go by without pain. Pain is getting worse. Popping/clicking in knee when I walk, just recently started (present at all times). Deep pain in the whole knee area. Having to prop knee up or use wedge when sitting. Painful when standing, walking, sitting, laying. Swelling (at times). Can’t walk any long distance. Hard to ride in car any distance without painful discomfort. Totally miserable. I did 4 months physical therapy 3 times a week. Was told I was doing great, way ahead of track. I kept telling them I still was in pain, but they didn’t know why. Had a NM bone scan 2 weeks ago, which according to my Dr. was “wierd”, and showed to be inconclusive. Just had a CT scan. Showed no loosening. Going to see my surgeon on 6-16-25. He will aspirate knee to totally rule out infection. Blood work was already done prior and didn’t show any infection. He is leaning toward complex regional pain syndrome, which I just don’t buy. Why then the clicking and popping? Anyone with similar issues? Thank you in advance!

Have you gotten a second opinion? It's obvious to me that you need one.

Yes, thank you! I will go see my surgeon on the 16th. If I am not happy, I will then go for a 2nd opinion. It’s already on my list.

Keep in mind that no surgeon wants to admit that they might have made a mistake on your surgery. These things happen but you are suffering terribly and this should not have gone on this long.

I have thought about that and totally agree with you, but my whole thinking behind that is that scan results don’t lie. But yes, I am going to get a second opinion after I see him on the 16th. Thank you!

Scans can't catch everything. Get a new surgeon with fresh eyes who has no axe to grind. Get 2 or 3 fresh opinions. Something is definitely wrong. Best wishes.

This is an example of why I have been exploring every way possible for the past year to avoid having a TKR. My best wishes to you in finding an answer.

I agree. I wasn’t happy with my first surgeon for TKR so got one at Mayo. Still in a lot of knee pain, but had to slow down exercise because I screwed up hip on the other leg. Looking at THR now. I don’t feel like I will ever walk again! I don’t know if I pulled a muscle but having sciatic pain and hip moving.

So sorry to learn of your continuing difficulties. I injured my knee by stepping into a hole in my lawn over 2 years ago and my problem developed slowly into osteoarthritis. I am afraid TKR will eventually be my only choice but I just turned 82 so am afraid of going through surgery. I will try another gel injection in August and go from there. Please try to stay positive about your situation and I wish you the very best!
